Synopsis
Symphogear XV is an action/sci-fi/music anime. This fifth season will follow Hibiki Tachibana, Tsubasa Kazanari, Chris Yukine, Shirabe Tsukuyomi, Maria Cadenzavna Eve, Shirabe Tsukuyomi, and Kirika Akatsuki as they use the power of their voices through song to protect the world with the help of their Symphogear which is a powerful armor used to combat the “Noise” and is activated when a user harmonizes with its relic. It has been some time since anyone has seen the “Noise,” but a similar wavelength was detected at Yokohama Oosan Bridge where a small hooded figure in black ran away with a small box. It seems there is a song to destroy the world and it’s up to the girls to save it.
Background
Symphogear XV is the fifth season and latest anime installment in the Symphogear series which began in November 2011 as a manga written by Akifumi Kaneko and Noriyasu Agematsu and illustrated by Dan Yoshii. It ran in Newtype Ace until April 2013. The smartphone game Senki Zessho Symphogear XD Unlimited by Bushiroad was released in June 2017.
Symphogear XV will be produced by Satelight, directed by Katsumi Ono, and written by Akifumi Kaneko, with music by Elements Garden. The opening song will be by Nana Mizuki and the ending song by Ayahi Takagaki.
Characters
Hibiki Tachibana (Voiced by: Aoi Yuuki)
Hibiki Tachibana almost died from the Noise but survived thanks to the sacrifice of Kanade. Her Symphogear is the third relic Gungnir which belonged to Kanande. Since it is only a fragment she has less armor but makes up for it by specializing in martial arts. When she becomes angry she sometimes goes into a frenzy.
Tsubasa Kazanari (Voiced by: Nana Mizuki)
Tsubasa Kazanari was originally part of the duo known a “Zwei Wing,” but her partner Kanade sacrificed herself for Hibiki. Due to this, she became cold and aloof. Her Symphogear is the first relic Ame no Habakiri and her armed gear is a katana. Though she is popular as a pop idol she views herself only as a weapon that sings only to fight. She has survived or been resurrected from at least a couple situations that others thought she had died from. She is the first heir of Fudo Kazanari, the current head of the Kazanari family.
Chris Yukine (Voiced by: Ayahi Takagaki)
Chris Yukine is a mysterious half-Japanese girl who once worked under the main villain Fine. She wanted to end all war by killing all those with the power and will to fight because her parents Masanori Yukine and Sonnet M. Yukine were killed in a terrorist attack during a music performance for refugees in a civil war and she was kidnapped and sold into sex slavery. She, however, didn’t live up to Finé’s expectations and later joined forced with Hibiki and Tsubasa. She has the ability to summon and command Noise with the relic “Solomons Cane” as well as has a Symphogear, the second relic Ichaival. Her armed gear is a crossbow, but with her violent imagination she can transform it into several kinds of guns and missiles.
Shirabe Tsukuyomi (Voiced by: Yoshino Nanjo)
Shirabe Tsukuyomi is a bold tactician who coordinates with Maria’s team. Her Symphogear Shul Shagana are disc blades stored throughout her body. Her parents were killed in car accident in which she received severe head trauma that caused her to lose all her memories of the past and her identity. She eventually regrets and redeems herself of her actions against Hibiki.
Maria Cadenzavna Eve (Voiced by: Yoko Hikasa)
Maria Cadenzavna Eve is an energetic singer who soared to the top of the American music charts just two months after her debut. She has fans from all around the world. Her Symphogear is a second Gungnir that is similar to Kanade’s but has a powerful cannon mode. Later, thanks to Elfnein, she starts using Serena’s relic Airgetlam which takes the form of a whip-sword that can be used several ways.
Kirika Akatsuki (Voiced by: Ai Kayano)
Kirika Akatsuki was part of the “Receptor Children” along with Maria, Serena, Shirabe, and others. She is straightforward, cheerful, and cooperative but also harbors a dark past. She often ends sentences with “death desu.” Her Symphogear Igalima is a scythe.
Miku Kohinata (Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi)
Miku Kohinata is Hibiki’s best friend. She eventually joins the Special Disaster Response Team Section Two to help Hibiki. Hibiki helps her after she becomes controlled and corrupted by Dr. Ver becoming the user fo the relic Shénshòujìng which can fire lasers using several mirrors and negate the effects of relics. Miku uses the Shénshòujìng for good later on to defeat Hibiki’s evil counterpart from a parallel world, Evil Hibiki.
