On January 11, Asuna has talked to Siune who said she had nothing to share about Yuuki in real life and added that the parting was for Asuna's sake more than anything. Kirito calls to meet him, and manages to procure the lead on Yuuki. Asuna goes to the Yokohama North General Hospital, the only place Kirito knew was testing the Medicuboid.

Asuna has a talk with Yuuki's doctor, Kurahashi, who tells her Yuuki is a HIV patient in a sterile room in Terminal Care, who spent three years online by now, having the pain blocked by the FullDive gear. As they continue talking behind the glass looking at Yuuki, Yuuki watches them talk via a CCTV camera.

Asuna remembers and asks about her sister, and Kurahashi says it was her twin sister Aiko, who died earlier to an opportunistic infection. Asuna is appalled but does not run away in fear, so Yuuki decides to talk (using a loudspeaker). She wants Asuna to meet her online using the AmuSphere in the next room. Asuna and Yuuki hug, and Yuuki tells the sad story of the Sleeping Knights, all people like herself, trying to have fun in palliative care in honor of Aiko before their imminent death, with three dead already. She tells Asuna her dream is not the fantasy things, but the real things, like the high school.

On January 12, Asuna uses a portable shoulder camera Kazuto had crafted to take Yuuki to her school, and later to her old abandoned house that was slated for demolishment. Yuuki reminisces, and they agree to have a barbecue party online later. They talk about Kazuto, and Yuuki warns Asuna he is living in a different world.

Yuuki gave Asuna the clue on how to talk to her mother right, talking with the feelings more than words. Asuna insists on a five-minutes talk with Kyōko online. They log in to the Forest House amid the winter landscape, which Asuna uses to remind her mother of the old times when Kyōko's parents would be there, and they would talk to Asuna about Kyōko, happy their busy daughter picked her path, and wanted to support her no matter what she chose, to embody her home, a place she could always fall back to if things got hard. Asuna wants Kyōko's support on her own path, too. Kyōko's eyes are welled with tears she could not manage to hide in-game. Asuna holds her shoulder. Back in the real world, things go better between them from then on.

In three days, Asuna holds the promised barbecue party in the same Forest House. The Sleeping Knights learn they are a celebrity and often a balance breaking element for many. They clear Floor 28, getting Kirito and Yuuki's names on the Monument of Swordsmen.

In February, the SK and Asuna clear Floor 29.

In the ALO Sword Tournament, Yuuki and Kirito fight, and Yuuki wins using her 11-hit combo skill, becoming the 4th Champion of the event.

Yuuki pays a visit to the Kirigaya residence, where Kazuto's insightful mind puts her off at first, but they find the common ground of One-handed Skills and chatter away, making Asuna a bit jealous.

Asuna goes on a trip to their main house in Kyoto with her mother as promised. Her friends are there with them via Kazuto's gadget.

On March 29, Yuuki's hospital calls Asuna. She learns Yuuki's condition is critical now, and so they talk in ALO again. Yuuki uses her Original Sword Skill, Mother's Rosario, one last time and collapses. She makes it a scroll for Asuna to pass on to someone else. Suddenly, the Sleeping Knights, Kazuto, and a thousand other known and unknown players appear to pay tribute to Zekken the legend. Yuuki is touched and rethinks her guilt about so many resources having been used to keep her alive all of those years. She dies peacefully in Asuna's embrace.

On April 4, Asuna goes to Yuuki's funeral in Hodogaya, as well as a hundred other ALO players, surprising Yuuki's relatives. Asuna thinks about what it means to live and survive, and what it meant to Yuuki. Then Siune appears and says she had an unexpected remission and left the hospital recently, and is feeling survivor's guilt now; Asuna comforts her. Siune mentions Jun is improving too.

Doctor Kurahashi and Kazuto come by. The Medicuboid testing was a resounding success, and Kurahashi thanks Kōjiro Rinko for providing the blueprints to work on. Kazuto mentions she was also the one who took care of Kayaba Akihiko's real-life body in SAO.
