Kirigaya Suguha, known as Leafa in ALfheim Online and Project Alicization, as well as, temporarily Terraria (テラリア) in PA, is Kirigaya Kazuto's cousin and adoptive sister who lives together with him. She appears throughout the canon Sword Art Online series, is a main character in the Fairy Dance Arc and a main character in the Girls Ops spin-off.

When Kazuto quit kendō, Suguha became a capable kendō practitioner in his stead to shield him from their grandfather's fury. While Kazuto was trapped in Sword Art Online, Suguha wanted to know what Kazuto liked about virtual reality massive multiplayer online games, so she talked about it with Nagata Shinichi (Recon) — a boy from her class who had the most experience with the VR games — and bought a safer FullDive gear, the AmuSphere, to play ALfheim Online as a Sylph warrior. She likes in-game flight so much as to have earned the nickname "Speedaholic" from Recon.

Personality

Suguha is cheery and confident, and much more social than Kazuto. Her character is strong, and she remained positive around Kazuto even after he started distancing himself from her after finding out they were not siblings and getting conscious about it. Suguha does not have much tolerance to the annoying or hostile people, and is quick to lose her temper; a good example was her punching Recon who had confessed to her and tried to kiss her.

With all her physical and mental strengths, Suguha can still get lonely and fragile, especially around Kazuto. For example, she cried when she saw him comatose and wearing the NerveGear, trapped in SAO. Also, when she wanted to get over her infatuation with him after Asuna appeared in Kazuto's life, she ended up falling for him again as Kirito in ALO; when Suguha learnt it was him, she became depressed and hid in her room. However, she will not let depression consume her for long.

Background

After Kazuto's parents' death in a traffic accident, Kirigaya Suguha and Kazuto grew up as siblings. Kazuto's and Suguha's mothers were sisters. Their grandfather, a former policeman and kendō champion, used to teach them kendō. Kazuto gave up after two years and became interested in computer tech instead. He learnt she was not his real sister then, became conscious and awkward about Suguha and started keeping his distance since then, until after SAO. Meanwhile, Suguha kept training and became a national quarter-finalist in kendō. In real-life, she is a better swordsmaster than Kazuto.

• In SAO: Infinity Moment, Leafa is the only main character to not have her real-life appearance.
• Shares her birthday with her English vocal actress Cassandra Lee Morris.
• Originally planned to be flat-chested, until editor suggested the change to Kawahara.
