Gun Gale Online (Japanese name, ガンゲイル・オンライン), is a VR MMORPG developed and operated by US developer, Zaskar. Emphasising gunplay for its combat system, it is known for the incredibly fierce Player vs. Player tournament, Bullet of Bullets (BoB).

History

GGO began operation in April, 2025 and became the most popular VR MMO title in the [Sword Art Online Universe]. It was created using the free VRMMO game development support package [The Seed], and it uses [FullDive] technology to place players inside of its post-apocalyptic world.

Due to the use of The Seed, GGO is part of [The Seed Nexus], which allows players from titles also using this technology to convert their avatars cross-title. Players who complete this conversion are not able to transfer items between games, and the stats of their avatar are adjusted to maintain relative balance and skill. If a player converts an avatar from one game, it cannot be used in the previous game unless they go through the conversion process again.

Setting

GGO takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Earth, which was ravaged by war long ago and was abandoned by the population utilizing space ships. In the game, the players have returned on Space Battle Cruiser Glocken, and are met by an unknown number of automated fighting machines and mutant creatures. SBC Glocken becomes the Capital City of the game, and the terrors below the city is where most of the fighting takes place.

Gameplay

GGO features a standard XP system, which allows the player to level up and increase stats. Once stat points have been assigned they cannot be reversed, so players must strategize how they wish to develop their skills for long-term gain.

Weapons

GGO features three classes of weapons, Optical Guns, Live-Ammunition guns, and Non-gun weapons.

Optical guns - These guns use light-based ammunition that are effective against NPC mobs. They are lighter weapons, are more precise, and have a longer effective range when compared to Live-Ammunition guns, however their magazine size is smaller. Defensive equipment worn by player characters will disperse optical damage, which makes these weapons ineffective for Player vs. Player combat. Optical guns are often given fanciful names, and have unique forms.

Live-Ammunition guns - These guns are built for Player vs. Player battles. Their bullets can pass through optical defense fields, and deal higher damager per hit when compared to optical weapons. Players have to contend with carrying heavier magazines in their kits when using these weapons, and live bullet trajectory that is affected by in-game weather conditions such as wind and humidity. Live-Ammunition guns are all based on weapons that exist in the real world.

Non-gun weapons - This class of weapon includes anything that is not a gun, such as knives or photon swords.

Squadrons

GGO utilizes Squadrons in place of a traditional Guild or Party system. Squadrons allow team-play, with some Squadrons preferring to hunt monsters, and others prefer the intensity of Player vs. Player combat.

Log-out

GGO uses the soul-less logout system, similar to the one used in [ALfheim Online]. While in a safe zone, the user can log-out immediately with no consequence. If the player chooses to log-out in the field, their body remains soul-less for a short period of time before the user is logged out. The player can be killed, and have their items stolen if they are killed while in the soul-less state. It is advised that all players log out while in a safe zone to guarantee safety.

Servers

GGO has two servers, one in the United States of America and the other in Japan. When the game launched, players could join either server despite their geo-location, but after the results of the first Bullet of Bullets event, the developers implemented a region lock so that the playerbase was forced to play on the server in their own region. However, one American player was somehow able to join the fourth BoB event in Japan, despite the strict region lock.

Currency

Credits is the form of currency in GGO. All players receive a starting amount of 1,000 credits when they join the service.

GGO is the only VR MMORPG game to feature a game coin to real money conversion system. Not only can players purchase in-game credits with Japanese Yen, but credits earned inside the game can also be converted to Japanese Yen. In December, 2025, the conversion rate was 100 credits to ¥1.

GGO players are charged a connection fee of ¥3,000 every month. Players are given six months to play for the connection fee. If they fail to do so, their account will be deleted.

GGO is the only VR MMORPG game to have Pro players. These players earn their entire real world income by converting their GGO credits into Japanese Yen. Players can use their converted credits to in-turn, pay for their monthly connection fees, and potentially earn a living via good play, and tournament results.
