Memory Defrag - Sword Art Online
Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag is a free-to-play side-scrolling RPG with a character collection element, often referred to as Gacha games. It was released on August 28, 2016 for Apple iOS and Android devices by Bandai Namco Entertainment.
PLOT
Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag is a retelling of the Sword Art Online anime story arcs fom the perspective of Kirito X, as he remembers the incidents that occured throughout the years. It explores the events of Sword Art Online, ALfheim Online and Gun Gale Online as players level up and collect their favourite characters from the anime to form a strong party.
GAMEPLAY
Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag features a three character party system, where the players will need to choose the best characters to defeat their current objective. As the player progresses throughout the story, they collect more heroes to create strong combinations with.
Each character has a preferred weapon, sometimes not what they are known for in the anime. The player can improve their character stats by upgrading gear or equipping new weapons and gear. To unlock new abilites or to increase stats, players need to spend crystals to progress along a skill grid. These crystals can only be earned by completing quests within the game.
Levels play out as a combination of flashback scenes from the anime, and instanced encounters. Flashback sequences are true to the source material, however the instanced encounters introduce combintations that would not appear in the anime. For the most part, players can select any three characters to complete quests, however there are key plot moments where specific chracters must be used.
Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag features co-operative multiplayer where three players can team up to complete quests that are too difficult to compelte alone.
Players can purchase Diamonds which will allow them to purchase random characters from the store. While purhcasing characters via microtransactions is possible, players will need to use those characters in the game in order to level them up by using them in battles and upgrading the skills and equipment.
There are six tiers of characters ranging from 1-6. Characters in tiers 3 and higher have Sword Skills that make them valuable for high impact battles. Tier 5 character were introduced in 2017 to celebrate the first year anniversary, and tier six were introduced a year later as another celebration event.
RECEPTION
Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag received favorable reviews from media, and fans a like. MMO Huts praised the game for being true to the source material. "If there’s one thing that Memory Defrag does not disappoint you with is that the game is faithful to a lot of elements found in SAO. The interface, the fonts used and even logging into Memory Defrag feels like you’re in SAO. Not only that, Memory Defrag also uses the switch system in SAO in Memory Defrag. In fact, it’s faithful enough that you need to stagger your opponent before you can switch between your party members just like in the anime."
