Story
The game is set in the same alternative storyline as its precursor Infinity Moment and, indeed, its first part, the "floor clearing" chapter, is quite simply the first game that was remastered with certain characters' stories slightly rehashed. Following that, a new "Hollow Area" chapter becomes available. This features multiplayer, new items, new mobs, and new stories which cover scenes and quests concerning Laughing Coffin. This chapter also introduces Phillia - a new orange player character. The player can also transfer their character from IM.

- Philia (Takemiya Kotone) - Phillia is a new character whose first appearance in the series is this game and acts as a key character in the Hollow Area arc.

- Sachi - Sachi is unable to leave the Hollow Area because of her Hollow Data identity.

- Kibao - Kibao is unlocked after completing an optional event line. The events begin upon interaction with him in a specific Bay Area garden. He cannot leave the Hollow Area because of his Hollow Data identity.
- Yuuki (Konno Yuuki) - After defeating Hollow Kirito, a special optional event fight will become available. In order to access this fight, the player has to defeat Heathcliff on Floor 100. Yuuki will appear after winning in this optional fight event. It is specifically a Half-Loss duel - a match that is decided upon either side dropping to 50% of their total Hit Points.

The region consists of six areas, with other areas that are hidden, and more that become available with the relevant downloadable content.
System
Gameplay
Simulates a virtual reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game (VRMMORPG) Sword Art Online. The player controls Kirito in third-person view, as the in-game players explore fields and dungeons full of monsters. Players can attack monsters in real time, and those other than Kirito act on their own, although Kirito can tell them to recover, defend, Switch, etc. Skills require SP that are slowly gained with the attacks that connected, and bonus points are awarded for parrying. In HF, a burst gauge was also added that interacts with the risk gauge; additionally, the players can now choose to attack manually, as opposed to the autoattacking system of the past.
In a boss room, the player can initiate a 8 people party boss raid consisting of Kirito, his partner, and other candidates from other guilds.
Floor 76, Arksophia, is the character hometown to R&R, customize their appearance, buy equipment, chat with other players, or find subquests. In HF, the player can create their own non-player character to partner up with, and team up with up to four other players in large raid groups to fight in the new Hollow Area region.
