Kazuto and Suguha go to Asuna's hospital together. When Suguha sees Asuna she realizes her feelings towards Kazuto. She thinks she might instead try her luck with Kirito, who seems to be a cool guy too.

They return home and enter ALO, to an inn in Alne. They go to the central district, and Yui says she found Asuna's presence nearby, sending Kirito into a frantic flight upwards, where they hit the invisible wall. Yui calls out to Asuna, who feels being called out, and drops the keycard which they catch. Kirito then says Leafa is free to go, and flies to the World Tree gate. He accepts the quest, and tests his mettle. The mobs swarm him, eventually getting hardier and killing him. Leafa catches up and revives him, however. Kirito realizes the Grand Quest was not made to be completable.

Kirito wants to try again, voicing Asuna's name, which Leafa overhears, and they learn each other's identities. Her heart broken twice in a row, Suguha disconnects, and the cousins have an uneasy talk through the door where Suguha tells Kazuto how she feels about him, thinking of their family circumstances. Kazuto goes away to wait for Leafa in-game. Suguha goes into ALO but is hesitant.

Recon finds Leafa, and their conversation helps her decide. Leafa goes to challenge Kirito on a duel, but both drop their weapons and make peace, as Kirito apologizes for having been so distant.

Kirito, Leafa, and Recon produce a plan so Kirito can reach the top of the Tree. Their forces are not enough and the battle seems lost, but with Recon's creativity and sacrifice, followed by the joint forces of Sylphs and Cait Siths who suddenly appeared, Kirito touches the top. There is an aperture that would not open, but Kirito uses the keycard, and it works. He moves forth, expecting the worst.

He finds Asuna, and they hug, but just then Oberon comes by. He is the game administrator, and proceeds to kick and torture Kirito, pinning him to the floor with a sword and allowing the pain tolerance level below 100% so he feels it. Then Oberon hangs Asuna in chains and sexually assaults her while explaining how he is too powerful to ever be beaten.

At that moment, [Kayaba Akihiko]'s voice suddenly comes alive and tells Kirito his own admin credentials that override Nobuyuki's. Kirito manages to get up and strip Nobuyuki of all privileges, then makes it a fair duel, removing the pain tolerance completely. Oberon is bad at fighting and withstanding pain, however, so Kirito defeats him in a gory, vengeful manner. He logs out Asuna and talks to Akihiko's in-game copy who bestows Kirito the World Seed — a freeware SAO-based game engine that he wants Kirito to spread. Akihiko then leaves.

Kazuto finds Suguha in his room upon logging out and thanks her before cycling to the hospital. However, the crazed bloodshot-eyed Nobuyuki stands in his way, knife in his hand. After the struggle, Kazuto nearly kills the overwhelmed Nobuyuki but instead tells about him to the receptionist. Then he finally meets Asuna in the real world.

Several months later, Kazuto and Asuna are in the SAO survivors school, talking about her father, Nobuyuki's imprisonment, the downfall of VRMMO market after two fiascos, and Kayaba Akihiko's official death in March as he scanned his brain. Lisbeth and Silica decide to give the couple a month before advancing on Kazuto themselves.

There is the Aincrad Capture Commemorative Party held at *Agil'*s "Dicey Café", where Andrew, Asuna, Kazuto, Lisbeth, Silica, Sasha, the now-married Yulier and Thinker, and Klein finally all meet each other.

Kazuto, Yui, Andrew, and Rinko make a site with the free download for the Seed, and ultimately, many fan VRMMOs pop up, reviving the genre and prompting education, communication, tourism, and other applications.

The second half of the party is held in ALO, now hosted by Ymir. Kirito has reset his stats earlier, closing the page of the Black Swordsman for good. He vows to clear New Aincrad and see the final 25 floors, asking for Leafa's help. Leafa tearfully agrees.
