Kirigaya Kazuto, known as Kirito online, is the lead protagonist of the Sword Art Online series. Kirito alongside being trapped within Sword Art Online, is also one of the 1,000 limited beta testers for the title. During the events of Sword Art Online, Kirito spent the majority of his time as a solo Clearer player, fighting at the highest levels of Aincrad, while partying up to help defeat boss battles.

Kirito's appearance in Sword Art Online and ALfheim Online are very similar. As the effects of Kayaba Akihiko reconfiguring player avatars at the start of the game, his appearance in-game is almost a near perfect reconstruction of his body in real life, with long black hair and black eyes.
Always seen wearing some kind of Black coat, Kirito focuses on one-handed sword combat, and by using his unique skill Dual-Blades, Kirito is the sole player in the game with the ability to attack foes with two one-handed swords simultaneously.

In ALfheim Online, Kirito plays as a Spriggan with his hair kept up in spikes, while keeping the same dark themed clothing, kirito did not keep his old attire with instead now wearing the default clothing that new players are given, however these differences were temporary, as he eventually returned to his trademark dark coats and simple hair style. When first starting out, Kirito used a large Greatsword for combat, surprising his friends who actively played the game, as it looked ill-suited for his class and appearance. This was eventually swapped out for using Longswords for combat, where we would eventually receive the game's strongest weapon, the Holy Sword Exaclibur.

Kirito's appearance is Gun Gale Online differs significantly to his previous two avatars, donning the rare and well-fought after M9000 series avatar. With long dark hair, reaching down to his waist, and very slim appearance, many players mistake him as a female player. Keeping his recognisable dark coat, a considering his trained experience with swords, Kirito armed himself with a Kagemitsu G4 Photon Sword, and FN Five-Seven as a pistol sidearm.

In The Underworld of Project Alicization, after becoming a valet of the Sword Master Academy, and becoming one of the 12 elite swordsman, Kirito was given the choice of colour for his uniform, where he chose to wear a dark black coat. His main arm, a one handed sword named the Night Sky Sword crafted using the topmost branch of the Gigas Cedar. As the Gigas Cedar was responsible for absorbing all the blessings of Terraria and Solus, it has a priority class of 46.

History

Before the events of Sword Art Online, Kirito was a 14 year old boy, raised by his Aunt and Uncle after a tragic accident resulting in his biological parents death. He found out about being an adopted child at the age of 10, and since the incident started to socialise less and less with his adopted sister, now known to be his biological cousin. As his aunt was an author for a technology magazine, he became more interested in computers and gaming as he grew older. Kirito became one of the 1,000 beta testers for Sword Art Online, out of the 10,000 people who applied. He spent hundreds of hours playing the game with the other testers, reaching the 10th floor in the process.
