Synopsis

Sato Matsuzaka had never been loved by anyone until she met Shio Kobe. Having found each other at last, the two girls draw closer and build a lovely life of happiness together. However, there is a dark cloud hanging over their sweet relationship. Sato will not let anyone threaten their fragile happiness and is prepared to stoop to intimidation, imprisonment, and finally murder in order to protect her love from those who might destroy it…

Anime Adaptation

Happy Sugar Life is adapted from the manga written and illustrated by Tomiyaki Kagisora which has been running in Gangan Joker since May 2015. The anime adaptation was announced in the April 2018 edition of Gangan Joker and began airing on July 14, 2018 as part of the Animeism programming block. Happy Sugar Life is streamed online internationally by Amazon Prime Video.

The series’ opening theme is "One Room Sugar Life” by Nanawo Akari, while ReoNa performs the ending theme, "Sweet Hurt”.

Characters

Sato Matsuzaka (Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa)

Sato Matsuzaka is the series protagonist who falls in love with Shio Kobe and keeps her in her apartment. If it’s for Shio, there’s nothing Sato wouldn’t do.

Shio Kobe (Voiced by: Misaki Kuno)

A young woman who loves Sato Matsuzaka and lives with her. Her family and origins remain shrouded in mystery while Shio also remains oblivious to the extent of Sato’s devotion as she is not allowed to leave the apartment.

Asahi Kobe (Voiced by: Yumiri Hanamori)

Asahi Kobe is a young boy who is desperately looking for Shio whom he assumes to be missing. Harboring a distrust for adults, he refuses to go home.

Taiyo Mitsuboshi (Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae)

Taiyo Mitsuboshi is a good-looking high school student who works alongside Sato at her part-time job in a family restaurant. Sexually harassed by his boss, Taiyo finds relief in Sato’s seeming innocence and becomes obsessed with her.

Shoko Hida (Voiced by: Aya Suzaki)

Shoko Hida is a high school girl who works alongside Sato at her part-time job.

Daichi Kitaumekawa (Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa)

Daichi Kitaumekawa is Sato’s high school teacher. He is very popular with the girls at school and worries about Sato’s home environment…

Sato's aunt (Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue)

Sato’s legal guardian. The school has so far failed to get in touch with her and no one seems to have actually seen her in person…
