Synopsis

In an alternate Edo era, humanity has been overthrown by alien invaders known as “Amanto”. Despite samurai resistance, the Shogun surrendered, signing a peace treaty which bans the wearing of swords in public. Eccentric samurai Gintoki Sakata helps his friend Shimpachi Shimura save his sister Tae from evil aliens who were trying to press her into a brothel, and later begins working with him on a series of odd jobs. When the pair rescue an alien girl, Kagura, from a group of yakuza who wanted to abuse her alien powers, the trio come together to operate the “Yorozuya”, brushing up against the Shinsengumi as they try to ply their trade in alien infested Edo.

Anime Adaptation

An anime adaptation of the Hideaki Sorachi manga first aired in April 2006 following a film by Shinji Takamatsu in September 2005. Since then hundreds of episodes have aired with animation by Sunrise and Bandai Namco Pictures.

The latest seasons are Shirogane no Tamashii-hen, or the Silver Soul Arc. This is the anime adaptation of the final arc of the manga, and season 1 began airing in January 2018 with a total of 12 episodes. Like past seasons, this one was animated by Sunrise.

Silver Soul Arc 2 began airing on July 8, and its opening and ending themes are “I Wanna Be…” by SPYAIR and “Hikaria Shoumeiron” by CHiCO with HoneyWorks, respectively.

Characters

Gintoki Sakata (Japanese: Tomokazu Sugita | English: Michael Daingerfield)

Leader of the Yorozuya, Gintoki is a silver haired former samurai who loves sweets so much it actually makes him angry if he can’t have any. During the war against the Amanto, Gintoki was known as the “White Demon” and was famous for his awe inspiring sword skills. These days he lives with Shinpachi and Kagura doing odd jobs to pay the rent and his preferred method of transportation is his scooter.

Shinpachi Shimura (Japanese: Daisuke Sakaguchi | English: Cole Howard)

Son of a swordsman, Shinpachi was left with massive debts when his father died and is at an extreme disadvantage following the prohibition of swords. Gintoki agrees to help rescue Shinpachi’s sister Tae who is in danger of being pressed into a brothel by Amanto and Shinpachi is so impressed with his skills that he ends up joining him to learn the ways of the samurai, eventually becoming a key member of the Yorozuya along with Kagura. Shinpachi is also the captain of the “Otsu's Imperial Guard” - a fan club for an Edo era idol.

Kagura (Japanese: Rie Kugimiya | English: Luci Christian)

A young Amanto girl from the Yato Clan, Kagura came to Earth to earn money for her family and ended up being used as a yakuza bodyguard but objected to their violent ways and eventually escaped, meeting Gintoki and convincing him to let her work at Yorozuya. Armed with a bulletproof parasol which also shields her sensitive skin from the sun Kagura is unbelievably strong but not always able to control her strength.

Sadaharu (Japanese: Mikako Takahashi)

An abandoned Inugami, Sadaharu was adopted as a pet by Kagura after his previous owners were forced to give him up. A huge dog big enough for the Yorozuya guys to ride on, Sadaharu has a habit of chowing down on anything smaller than himself and can only be controlled by Kagura’s immense alien strength.

Isao Kondo (Japanese: Susumu Chiba | English: Jason Simpson)

Isao Kondo is the leader of Shinsengumi and receives massive respect from his team who are fiercely loyal to him. He also has a crush on Shinpachi’s sister Tae, even going so far as to become a stalker and has a habit of stripping off at random moments.

Toshiro Hijikata (Japanese: Kazuya Nakai | English: Michael Adamthwaite)

Known as the “Demon Vice-Chief”, Toshiro Hijikata is the chain smoking second in command of the Shinsengumi. A much feared superior who often threatens his men with Seppuku, Hijikata also has an embarrassing love of mayonnaise which puts a damper on his cool reputation.

Sougo Okita (Japanese: Kenichi Suzumura | English: Vincent Tong)

The best swordsman in the Shinsengumi, Sougo Okita has a strong dislike of Hijikata and has his sights set on displacing him as the Vice-Commander. Despite his skill with the sword, Okita is fond of the bazooka and is often to be found slacking off and taking naps rather than getting on with work.

Sagaru Yamazaki (Japanese: Tetsuharu Ohta | English: Adrian Petriw)

Intelligence officer Sagaru Yamazaki often slacks off work to go play badminton by himself and is beaten by Vice-Commander Hijikata as punishment. Yamazaki is also obsessed with eating anpan, often with a glass of milk.

Katakuriko Matsudaira (Japanese: Norio Wakamoto)

An important Daimyo and superior to the Shinsengumi, Katakuriko Matsudaira spends money likes its going out of fashion and enjoys an intense party lifestyle. He is also extremely protective of his daughter Kuriko.

Kamotarou Itou (Japanese: Mitsuaki Madono)

Political advisor to the Shinsengumi, Kamotarou Itou is also a master swordsman. He is loathed by Hijikata who has seen through his earnest exterior to the dark heart below.

Kotaro Katsura (Japanese: Akira Ishida | English: Matt Ellis)

A former comrade of Gintoki’s from the Joi War, Kotaro Katsura continues to resist the Amanto and is constantly on the run from the Shinsengumi for his terrorist activities. For this reason he has a love of disguises though they are often not very efficient such as his famous “Space Captain Katsura” persona in which he dresses as a pirate with an eyepatch and scar on his face. Despite his skill with a sword he’s fond of throwing grenades and goes by the nickname “Zura”.

Elizabeth (Japanese: Toru Furuya | English: Andrew Love)

Elizabeth is a pet given to Kotaro Katsura by his colleague Tatsuma Sakamoto. Using sign boards for communication and occasional attacks, the true nature and identity of “Elizabeth” remain uncertain.

Shinsuke Takasugi (Japanese: Koyasu Takehito | English: Alex Zahara)

Head of the radical Joi faction Kiheitai, Shinsuke Takagi is a former comrade of Gintoki and Katsura from the Amanto invasion but is now hunted by the Shinsengumi as one of the worst terrorists plaguing the city.

Bansai Kawakami (Japanese: Takumi Yamazaki)

Right-hand man of Takasugi, Bansai Kawakami is one of the Kiheitai’s strongest swordsmen and hides his katana inside a shamisen the strings of which he also uses to garrotte people. In addition to his Kiheitai activities, Kawakami is also a talented songwriter and music producer operating under the name Tsunpo and penning some of the biggest hits for idol star Otsu.

Nizo Okada (Japanese: Yutaka Aoyama)

Known as “The Butcher”, Nizo Okada is a blind assassin in the pay of Takasugi. After his sword was broken in the fight with Gintoki, he gets a new high tech weapon “Benizakura” crafted by Tetsuya Murata.

Matako Kijima (Japanese: Risa Hayamizu)

Matako Kijima is the only woman among the Kiheitai and is fiercely loyal to Takasugi. Her trademark use of two revolvers has earned her the nickname of “Red Bullet”.

Henpeita Takechi (Japanese: Chafurin)

Henpeita Takechi is an eccentric and the chief strategist of the Kiheitai. He describes himself as a “feminist” who is fond of children.

Kyubei Yagyu (Japanese: Fumiko Orikasa | English: Advah Soudack)

A childhood friend of Tae Shimura, Kyubei Yagyu was raised as a boy in order to succeed as the head of her clan. Kyubei is also a skilled swordswoman and is determined to continue honing her skills to become even stronger.

Binbokusai Yagyu (Japanese: Naoki Tatsuta)

Head of the Yagyu family, Binbokusai Yagyu is a master swordsman and teacher to Kyubei. Binbokusai hates waste so much that his favorite hobby is picking up bits of things other people have thrown away in case they come in handy.

Koshinori Yagyu (Japanese: Takaya Kuroda)

Son of Binbokusai and father of Kyubei, Koshinori Yagyu raised his daughter as a boy so she could inherit the clan. Somewhat image obsessed, he insists Kyubei call him “papa” and keeps cats despite an allergy.

Ayumu Tojo (Japanese: Koji Yusa)

Chronicler of the Yagyu, Ayumu Tojo has been the bodyguard of Kyubei since she was a child and has become extremely fond of and dedicated to his master.

Itsuki Kitaoji (Japanese: Kenji Hamada)

One of the four Devas of the Yagyu family, Itsuki Kitaoji is a perspicacious glasses wearing swordsman with a strategic mind. Away from the battlefield he has an intense mania for ketchup.

Tsukamu Nishino (Japanese: Yoshinori Sonobe)

Tsukamu Nishino is one of the four Devas of the Yagyu family but prefers hand-to-hand combat over swordplay. Despite his impressive bulk, Tsukamu’s favorite food is actually kids’ lunch sets.

Sui Minamito (Japanese: Hikaru Midorikawa)

One of the four Yagyu Devas, Sui Minamoto is a vain man overly fond of his face and is nicknamed “dick head” by his colleagues.

Tae Shimura (Japanese: Satsuki Yukino | English: Janyse Jaud)

Tae Shimura is Shinpachi’s older sister and runs the Kodokan Dojo, working part-time in a hostess bar to make ends meet. Head of the Shinsengumi, Kondo, has a crush on her and keeps trying to pressure her into marriage but she isn’t interested. She is a dreadful cook and her tamagoyaki is so disgusting that Kondo suffered memory loss after eating it.

Otose (Japanese: Kujira)

Gintoki’s landlay, Otose’s real name is Ayano Terada and despite her constant complaints about his lateness with his rent, she is happy with Gintoki’s ability to protect her. Nicknamed “Empress of the Kabuki District”, Otose is one of four Emperors ruling the Yoshiwara.

Catherine (Japanese: Yuu Sugimoto)

An Amanto girl with cat ears on her head, Catherine works at Otose’s snack bar and is extremely loyal to her boss for hiring her again when she came out of prison after being caught stealing.

Tama (Japanese: Minami Omi | English: Chantal Strand)

Codenamed Fuyo Unit Zero, Tama is an android picked up by Gintoki and named by Kagura who was really into egg on rice when Tama was found. She was created by Professor Ryuzan Hayashi who wanted to bring his daughter back to life. Tama works at Otose’s snack bar alongside Catherine.

Taizo Hasegawa (Japanese: Fumihiko Tachiki | English: Ted Cole)

Taizo Hasegawa used to be an elite working for the bakufu but since he got fired he’s become a useless middle-aged man whose wife has left him. Refusing to remove his sunglasses and shave his goatee, Taizo is gambling buddies with Gintoki.

Gengai Hiraga (Japanese: Takeshi Aono, Bin Shimada | English: Scott McNeil)

Gengai Hiraga is Kabuki District’s greatest mechanic and a master inventor. His son was killed after joining Kiheitai to oppose his inventions, allowing Takasugi to use his grief against him.

Hedoro (Japanese: Tessho Genda)

Hedoro is an Amanto who moved to Earth from another planet and opened a florist next to Otose’s snack bar. Despite his fearsome past as an all powerful warrior, Hedoro has a caring personality and loved life on Earth right down to plants and insects. He hates hot baths and has parents as well as four siblings.

Ane (Japanese: Maya Okamoto)

Oldest of twin sister priestesses, Ane works at Snack Smile.

Mone (Japanese: Masako Jo)

In contrast to her older twin sister, miko priestess Mone has a pessimistic personality.

Tatsumi (Japanese: Aiko Hibi)

A young girl rescued by the Chief Fireman, Tatsumi is a member of Kabuki District’s Fire Brigade.

Tetsuko Murata (Japanese: Keiko Nemoto)

Tetsuko Murata is a top swordsmith in Edo working alongside her older brother, Tetsuya.

Kyoshiro (Japanese: Atsushi Kisaichi)

Kyoshiro runs the Takamagahara Host club with Hachiro and is the number one host in town.

Hachiro (Japanese: Hidenari Ugaki)

Hachiro is a good friend of Kyoshiro with whom he co-founded host club Takamagahara and was originally born a girl called Hanako.

Tokumori Saigou (Japanese: Hisao Egawa)

Also known as Kishin Mademoiselle Saigou, Tokumori Saigou is one of Kabuki Town’s four generals and was a much feared warrior during the Joi War where he was known as “Shiro-fun no Saigou” because he once fought a warship wearing only a white fundoshi. These days he’s the manager of a gay bar and became both mother and father to his son Teruhiko when his wife died.

Kujaku Hime Kada (Japanese: Miki Ito)

One of the four emperors of Kabuki District, Kujaku Hime Kada built a casino empire and is beautiful but haughty. She was also the Captain of the 4th squad of the Harusame Space Pirates.

Kurogoma Katsuo (Japanese: Katashi Ishizuka)

Kurogoma Katsuo is the leader of the Dobunezumi group and has a pet Daschund called Meru-chan.

Tatsugorou Terada (Japanese: Hiroaki Hirata)

Tatsugorou Terada is the late husband of Otose who was killed during the Joi War.

Tsukuyo (Japanese: Yuko Kaida | English: Marlie Collins)

“Death God Courtesan” Tsukuyo is the leader of the Hyakka (Blooms of Yoshiwara) - a band of all female assassins active in the Yoshiwara deployed by the Night King Hosen. She has a very poor tolerance for alcohol and was raised by Jiraia after being orphaned as a child.

Hinowa (Japanese: Tomo Sakurai, Kikuko Inoue | English: Kelly Sheridan)

Also known as the Sun of Yoshiwara, Hinowa is the highest ranking courtesan in the red light district. She once tried to escape the Yoshiwara with Seita, but was brought back by Housen and the Hyakka. Housen had her achilles tendons cut to ensure she never tried to run again.

Seita (Japanese: Yuuko Sanpei)

Seita is the adopted son of Hinowa and is saving money to buy her freedom through pickpocketing and other illicit activities.

Jiraia (Japanese: Yusaku Yara)

Known as Jiraia the Spider, Jiraia’s real name is Danzou Tobita. Jiraia raised Hyakka commander Tsukuyo after her parents died and was once a member of the Oniwabanshu. Born as an Iga samurai Jiraia also has impressive ninja skills.

Kamui (Japanese: Satoshi Hino)

Older brother of Kagura, Kamui is an Amanto warrior and the leader of the 7th squad of space pirates Harusame later teaming up with Shinsuke Takasugi. Kamui thinks the rest of his family are weak in their attachments to other people and is as bloodthirsty a warrior as any Amanto, even trying to kill his own father and cutting his own arm off in the process.

Abuto (Japanese: Houchu Otsuka)

Second in command of the 7th Division of Harusame's Thunder Guns, Abuto lost his left arm trying to stop a fight between Kamui and Hosen.

Umibouzu (Japanese: Sho Hayami)

A renowned “Alien Buster” Umibouzu’s real name is Kankou and he is father of Kamui and Kagura. Umibouzu is completely devoted to his daughter and even left home in fear that his Yato blood might someday bring harm to her.

Housen (Japanese: Banjo Ginga)

Also known as the “Night King” and the ruler of the Yoshiwara, Housen is the former member of the Harusame space pirates and the mentor of Kamui.

Crystel Ketsuno (Japanese: Sayaka Narita)

Also known as Ana Ketsuno, Crystel Ketsuno is a popular TV news and weather presenter Gintoki has a massive crush on. She also moonlights as an “onmyouji” sorceress which is how she manages to predict the weather.

Seimei Ketsuno (Japanese: Hikaru Midorikawa)

Current head of the Ketsuno clan, Seimei is an onmyouji sorcerer and the overprotective older brother of Crystel Ketsuo.

Douman Shirino (Japanese: Ken Narita)

An onmyouji and current head of the Shirino clan, Douman Shirino was once good friends with Seimei but not so much now seeing as he is also Crystel’s ex-husband.

Gedoumaru (Japanese: Ayako Kawasumi)

Gedoumaru is a Shikigami given to Gintoki by Ana Ketsuno. She looks cute on the outside, but she’s a demon through and through!

Pandemonium

Pandemonium is a kind of insect the Shikigami like to eat. One time Shinpachi ended up kissing one and it turned into a beautiful woman!

Ayame Sarutobi (Japanese: Yuu Kobayashi, Kazuyuki Okitsu | English: Ashleigh Ball, Samuel Vincent)

Ayame Sarutobi is a masochistic female ninja who developed an intense crush on Gintoki when she fell through his roof.

Tatsuma Sakamoto (Japanese: Shinichiro Miki | English: Andrew Francis)

A former comrade of Gintoki during the Joi War, Tatsuma Sakamoto is now a successful businessman and the head of the Kaientai corporation.

Mutsu (Japanese: Akeno Watanabe | English: Tabitha St. Germain)

Tatsuma Sakamoto’s right hand woman, Mutsu does most of the actual work at Kaientai.

Zenzo Hattori (Japanese: Keiji Fujiwara | English: Brent Miller)

Head of the freelance Shinobi 5, Zenzo Hattori also moonlights as a ninja pizza delivery boy and was once a member of the Oniwabanshu. He also suffers from piles which means he’s lost without a washlet and a floor cushion to sit on.

Pirako Chin (Japanese: Ai Nonaka)

Daughter of Jirocho Doromizu, Pirako Chin came to Kabuki District on a mission.

Jirocho Doromizu (Japanese: Fumitoshi Miyajima, Takayuki Sugou)

Jirocho Doromizu is the leader of the Dobunezumi yakuza clan and one of the Four Devas of Kabuki District until he stepped down in favor of his daughter Pirako Chin.

Shige Shige Tokugawa (Japanese: Yuuki Ono | English: Lucas Gilbertson)

Shige Shige Tokugawa is the Shogun of Edo ruling with assistance from his uncle Sada Sada. Because of Sada Sada’s corruption, Shige Shige is forced to resign and is frequently taken advantage of because of his good natured personality. He also has a younger sister, Soyo, who is good friends with Kagura.

Soyo Tokugawa (Japanese: Ryo Hirohashi | English: Caitlynne Medrek)

Soyo-hime is the younger sister of Shige Shige Tokugawa, the Shogun of Edo. Longing for the outside world she leaves the castle and ends up making friends with Kagura.

Mori Mori Tokugawa (Japanese: Ryoko Shiraishi)

Mori Mori Tokugawa is the nephew of Shige Shige, Shogun of Edo.

Kuriko Matsudaira (Japanese: Chiwa Saito)

Kuriko is the daughter of over-protective police chief Katakuriko Matsudaira.

Prince Hata (Japanese: Kouichi Sakaguchi)

Prince Hata is a strange purple alien with a habit of collecting rare animals to keep as pets. Nicknamed “Prince Baka”, Hata is an irresponsible pet owner who frequently allows his animals to get out and wreak havoc on Edo. He is usually accompanied by his exasperated butler Jiji.

Saki Hanano (Japanese: Yukari Tamura)

Also known as Ana Hanano, Saki Hanano is a news reporter for Oedo TV.

Terakado Tsuu (Japanese: Mikako Takahashi)

Affectionately known as Otsu by her friends, Terako Tsuu is the top idol in Edo much loved by Shinpachi.

Shouyou Yoshida (Japanese: Koichi Yamadera | English: Simon Hayama)

Shouyou Yoshida was the private school teacher of Gintoki, Katsura, and Takasugi.
