OtapediaDragon Ball Fanfiction - Dragon Ball

Since the Dragon Ball series written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama has become one of the most popular works in the world, some fans write and share some fan-made stories where they let their imagination run free when regarding a specific work. These works are not made for profit, as fanfictions are often published online for all to see. That said they all share the objective of sharing with their thoughts and expanding the Dragon Ball universe with “what-if” stories that cover hypothetical scenarios.

Although there are many kinds of different stories within fanfiction, a considerable part of the fanfiction world revolves around romantic or sexual relationships between two characters, usually between those considered non-canonical. These relationships are also often described with explicit details. In addition, within fanfiction, a large percentage of these relationships are homosexual relationships, with couples formed by men being the most common.

Some of the most popular fanfiction platforms include the following:

  • Archive Of Our Own (AO3)

  • Commaful

  • Fanfiction.net

  • Wattpad

  • Quotev

Fanfiction Rating System

In order to avoid controversy or exposing readers to sensitive or mature content, some platforms like FictionRatings.com offer a rating system to label their stories according to the content found in them. For instance, Fanfiction.net uses this FictionRatings.com system.

Based on this system, the allowed ratings are K, K+, T and M.

  • K rating: These fanfictions are for audiences 5 years old or older. Any story labeled as K should be free of coarse language, adult topics, and violence.

  • K+ rating: Fanfictions with this rating are for readers 9 years old or older. These stories can contain minor coarse language and violence. It should, however, be free of adult themes.

  • T rating: T rated fanfictions are generally gears for readers that are 13 years old or older. These fanfictions often have some non-explicit violence and minor coarse language as well as some minor adult themes.

  • M rating: These stories are for people 16 years old and older. It contains coarse language, violence and adult themes, though they shouldn’t be too explicit.

Dragon Ball Ships

A “ship” is a love story that fans imagine between two or more characters of the original story and is often seen as a main appeal of fanfiction stories. These romances do not have to correspond with the reality of the series, but the relationship between some characters creates some expectations among fans, allowing them to gain popularity. To make it easier to identify the characters in a ship, fans often create a name that combines the names of the characters involved.

Such ships can be heterosexual, homosexual (or slash, in the case of men, femslash, in the case of women), poly (more than two members) and family (between family members).

In the case of Dragon Ball, there are not as many ships as there are in another series and, unlike most ships that appear in fanfictions, they are mostly heterosexual (though there are a few slash. The most popular ships of Dragon Ball are the following:

Heterosexual

Slash

  • Goku Black x Zamasu (also Black Zamasu) - Goku Black and Zamasu
  • Goku x Vegeta - Goku and Vegeta

Dragon Ball’s Crossovers

On Fanfiction.net, Dragon Ball-related fanfics are mostly ranked as T or K, meaning that these stories are geared towards a younger readership. As such, only a minor amount of violence, coarse language, and adult themes are present.
