Yo! Son Goku and Friends Return!! (OVA) - Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! was the first Dragon Ball animation to be released in almost ten years following Goku’s appearance in the remade Dr. Slump anime series in 1999. The OVA was first shown in Japan on the 21st of September, 2008, at the Jump Super Anime Tour to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Shōnen Jump.
Story
Two years after Kid Buu was defeated by Goku, Mr. Satan is still mistakenly hailed as the hero. As a huge hotel is being constructed in his name is completed, he invites all of the fighters who helped in the fight against Buu. Goku’s family continues to farm radishes, even though Mr. Satan provides modest sums of money to compensate for the fame and credit he accidentally received for Buu’s defeat. Videl calls Gohan and asks him to bring all of his family to the party, to which Goku refuses until he hears about the open banquet.
Master Roshi, Android 18, and Krillin set off for the hotel and agree to take Goku's family along with them while Piccolo flies behind. Vegeta’s family arrives first and, when he and Goku meet, they begin to argue because they both wore their fighting clothes to the party. When the party starts, Goku and Vegeta leave for the main hall. Other attendees include Dende, Mr. Popo, Korin, Yajirobe, King Kai, Bubbles, Gregory, Kibito Kai, Old Kai, Puar, Launch, and Ox-King. While everyone is eating, two space pods land on Earth.
A Saiyan and a small alien appear from the space pods. The Saiyan uses a scouter to scan the party and suddenly calls Vegeta ‘big brother’. The party guests are stunned as the small Saiyan introduced himself as Tarble, Vegeta’s younger brother. The reason no one knew about Tarble is that he was sent to a far-away planet due to his lack of combat ability. Tarble, however, has been found and is being pursued by former members of Frieza’s army, Abo and Kado.
Typically, Goku becomes excited at the prospect of fighting someone strong. Tarble measures Goku with his scouter tells him it would be useless, as his power level is too low. Vegeta immediately berates the younger Saiyan for relying on a scouter to read power levels. Goku begins to power up and the scouter explodes when he turns Super Saiyan. Tarble is shocked by this ability and can't believe what he is seeing. Soon, everyone is arguing over who will get to fight the alien threat. Goku, Vegeta, Krillin, Gohan, the kids, and even Master Roshi all want a piece of the action.
Goku teleports everyone to Mount Paozu suggesting that whoever pulls out the longest radish wins and can fight the invaders. Goten seemingly draws out the longest radish much to Vegeta’s disappointment. Jealous, he urges Trunks to pull out an even longer one. Now under a lot of pressure, Trunks pulls out a very thin radish, which turns out to be longer than Goten’s. Vegeta is now proud and tells his son to avenge his uncle.
Meanwhile, Abo and Kado continue their pursuit of Tarble and land on Earth, leading to them causing a ruckus at the hotel. Goku teleports everyone back and suggests that if there are two enemies, then there should also be two people allowed to fight. Vegeta insists that Trunks alone can handle the situation, but ignoring what Vegeta says, Goku then tells Goten that he can join the fight. Vegeta is angered by this, but allows it when persuaded by Bulma.
Abo and Kado claim that they are even stronger than Frieza now. Upon hearing this, Goku is interested in seeing how the boys will handle the fight. Abo and Kado are easily beaten around until they split into three people each and start taking back control of the fight. Vegeta is angry at Trunks for relying on his eyes and ears and tells him to sense the ki of the original. He can’t get the hang of it, so he asks Gohan for advice, which Gohan obliges, once again turning the tide in the boys’ favor. Abo and Kado, now overwhelmed by the young Saiyans, decided to fuse into Aka.
Aka is far stronger than Abo and Kado were individually and is able to mercilessly beat Trunks and Goten without much difficulty. The boys get tired of being on the defensive, though, and they also fuse into Gotenks. At first, they fail and form Fat Gotenks, but succeed at a second attempt. He proceeds to crush the giant Aka using Yamcha’s Wolf Fang Fist, Tien’s Volleyball Attack, and Dynamite Rolling Thunder Punch in Super Saiyan form. Aka is launched into a nearby lake and submerged while everyone continues to eat, as the fight is seemingly over. Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Gotenks however remain. The battle is far from over as Aka rises from the lake enraged. He fires an energy blast hitting Gotenks and causing the destruction of the newly built Hotel. Aka then continues firing indiscriminately destroying more and more of the hotel.
Piccolo deflects the energy attacks with a Special Beam Cannon, Krillin with a Destructo Disc, and Yamcha protects Bulma, Oolong and Puar from the falling rubble by using the Spirit Ball. Yajirobe and Roshi also save some people from the falling debris. During this time, Krillin and Yamcha change into their iconic turtle school fighting uniform. Goku and Vegeta decide to wrap up the fight. While dashing towards Aka, Goku distracts Vegeta momentarily allowing him a brief chance to boost ahead towards Aka. Aka fires a flaming energy attack, which Goku counters with a Kamehameha and follows up with a strong punch.
With Aka defeated and the hotel ruined, Videl reminds Mr. Satan the cost of an overinflated ego to which he sullenly consents. Goku offers to fix it with the Dragon Balls but Mr. Satan declines, remembering Videl’s words. The party continues by the ruins of the hotel and Goku invites Abo and Kado to join. They are impressed by how delicious Goku’s family’s radishes are. Goku and Vegeta begin to quarrel and childishly eat each other’s favorite foods that they were both saving for last, eventually turning Super Saiyan and yelling while their wives Chi-Chi and Bulma respectively hide their heads in embarrassment.
