Beerus - Dragon Ball
Lord Beerus is a Dragon Ball character created by Akira Toriyama. His first appearance is in the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods movie in the 2013 film feature as the main antagonist and returns as a supporting character in the Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' movie and as a main protagonist character in the Dragon Ball Super manga and anime series.
Character and Personality
Beerus is a God of Destruction that with his angel attendant Whis, looks over Universe 7, the universe that includes the Earth that follows the Dragon Ball timeline with Goku. He is a purple, hairless anthropomorphism of a cat wearing Egyptian ornaments and clothing. The sclera of his eyes are golden yellow together with prominent pointed ears. Akira Toriyama created the character based on the physical characteristics and personality of his own 14-year old cat. His cat survived a severe illness in the past and jokes how his cat was “demonic” and in turn was the base for the immortal and unbeatable Beerus.
Despite his extreme power, Beerus' personality is similar to a regular cat. His playfulness and lazy behavior is characterized by having long periods of sleep sessions and grooming while licking his body. In addition, the immense power he carries gives him the confidence to display his dominance and spoiled nature of claiming whatever he desires. Beerus desires include being an avid gourmet fan, enjoying eating delicious food, his planet keeps different sorts of food, including fish. His facial expressions and similar cat gestures give a contrasting impression from his fearsome God-image.
Beerus’ main responsibility is to maintain the balance of the universe through the destruction of planets, unlike the Supreme Kai, who preserves and creates it. Whis states that Beerus is a universe buster, most often seen destroying planets. The criteria for which planet to annihilate is based entirely on whether the food on the planet can satisfy his hunger and appetite. Beerus is seen many times destroying an entire planet (or half a planet) just because he was not satisfied with the taste of food.
However, in addition to his appetite for food, his appetite for fighting worthy opponents is as significant. Upon hearing of a prophecy of a Super Saiyan God with a power that would rival him, Beerus and Whis go on search for the prophecy and make their way to Earth. There the Z fighters meet Beerus for the first time. With no Super Saiyan God at the time of his arrival he threatened to destroy the Earth unless the Z fighters could summon the prophecy. Goku and others with Saiyan blood, follow a ritual that in turn gives Goku the power of a Super Saiyan God. The fight proves to be universe shaking as Beerus and Goku clash, creating ripples that traveled through the macrocosm of Universe 7, which would destroy the universe if continued. Ultimately Goku is defeated by Beerus and from enjoying the match between them he spares Goku and the Earth from destruction. Declaring Goku as the second strongest opponent he faced. The first one is his Martial Arts teacher and caretaker, Whis.
Techniques
Beerus Judgement: Lord Beerus' mentions the story of using his judgment to annihilate the prehistoric dinosaurs on Earth, this was after his awakening from a long slumber. While in Dragon Ball Super, a scene where Lord Beerus offered food by a planet full of humanoid pigs, which he decides to destroy half of the planet by using his Judgement power.
Sphere of Destruction or Beerus Ball is when Beerus creates a small sun ball like the energy in between his hands and then raises his arms, enlarging the ball and launches it.
Wrath of the God of Destruction is a technique Beerus uses during his battle with Goku in the movie, whereas Hakai (Destruction 破壊 (はかい) is Beerus strongest technique to destroy all entities and objects within the universe altogether. Hakai can destroy the soul and body of a mortal instantly, even with the low-tier Gods. He uses this technique with Zamasu and Dr. Mashirito's ghost. All Gods of Destruction can use it.
Notable Battles with Other Characters
With Goku (Super Saiyan God/Base/Super Saiyan): Beerus awakens earlier than expected from his 40-year nap, and Whis informs him of a prophecy of a strong Saiyan fighter called a Super Saiyan God. Before taking his search to Earth he visits Goku training on King Kai’s planet. He gets challenged by Goku into a sparring match, a battle which eventually brings Goku to use his ultimate moves. Although Beerus remained undefeated against Goku, he is impressed with Goku's abilities and transformation (Super Saiyan 3) despite being a mortal.
With Champa (Dragon Ball Super): The fight originates from an argument about whose universe has the best food, which led into fist battles that were interrupted by their Angels. Universe 7's Earth becomes a candidate & eventual winner, a factor that Universe 6 lacks. Champa becomes insanely jealous of Beerus and challenges him to a tournament with a representative team of their own. Again, this battle became Beerus' victory with the help of Earth's heroes. Another encounter with Champa is on a Baseball Match, a friendly tournament between them where Beerus accepts, they both become coach of their team. This event turns into an argument between the two that destroys the arena. Once again, their Angels, Vados and Whis halts the brawl and reminds them of the rules of fighting against Gods of Destruction. As the two believe they are in a tie, Universe 7 gained an absolute victory with Vados informing them of Yamcha's current hand location at the base. Champa flies off with Vados and his team while doing practices.
With Zamasu (Zoku Black Arc): Whis, Beerus’ angel detects that Goku Black's Ki has similarities to a Universe 10's Supreme Kai. Beerus appears on a timeline where he witnessed the evil-doings of Zamasu using Whis' time-traveling powers. In the present he interrupts Zamasu from killing Gowasu. Zamasu becomes determined to pursue his plans at the knowledge of a successful evil future and charges into Goku, but Beerus interrupts by taking his hand and destroys him with the God of Destruction Hakai technique.
Voice Actor
Koichi Yamadera voices Beerus for the Japanese original character in the series. Jason Douglas voices in Funimation English dub and John Mita for the Bang Zoom dub of the Dragon Ball Super adaptation.
