Summary

King Kai suddenly detects that the entire South Galaxy has been destroyed. He contacts Goku and tells him that the North Galaxy (the galaxy Earth is in) will likely be targeted next. Despite being in a meeting that might decide whether or not Gohan will be enrolled in a private school, Goku uses Instant Transmission to teleport to King Kai’s planet to get more details.

Meanwhile, many of the Z Fighters are at a picnic and enjoying themselves until a spaceship suddenly lands nearby and many soldiers begin marching off of it. Their leader, Paragus, approaches Vegeta and addresses him as their king. Paragus tells him that a New Planet Vegeta has been created and they need a worthy Saiyan heir to rule them. Although he refuses, Vegeta does agree to follow them after Paragus describes the threat of a Legendary Super Saiyan possibly destroying the North Galaxy. Gohan, Krillin, Future Trunks, Oolong, and Master Roshi all go with Vegeta to the new Saiyan planet, as they believe that his story is very suspicious.

On New Planet Vegeta, the group is introduced to Paragus’ son, Broly, who joins them on the hunt for the destructive Legendary Super Saiyan. Krillin, Gohan, and Trunks break off from the main group and discover that the planet had been built by exploiting an entire race of aliens, who say that the Legendary Super Saiyan had destroyed their planet. The three fighters try to defend the helpless slaves from their abusive masters. Goku uses Instant Transmission to teleport to the battlefield after his talk with King Kai. Broly seems to become instantly agitated after seeing Goku, though Paragus manages to keep Broly under control using a device on his bracelet.

Late that night, Broly attacks Goku, though they seem to be evenly matched. Paragus manages to calm Broly down again, but Goku begins to suspect that Broly is the Legendary Super Saiyan that they are looking for. He also gets the feeling that Paragus is hiding something from everyone, though he doesn’t know what it is. He eventually confronts Paragus, and Broly’s backstory is revealed.

Goku and Broly were both born around the same time and were kept right next to each other in the Saiyan nursery when they were babies. Goku’s non-stop crying as an infant had apparently mentally affected Broly to the point that he had held a subconscious hatred for him ever since. It was also explained that Broly was born with an unbelievably high power level, especially for a newborn baby. King Vegeta feared this power and ordered for Broly’s death immediately. Paragus begs for King Vegeta to spare his child’s life, but is instead beaten. The two manage to survive, however, and escape the planet before it is destroyed by Frieza.

Broly’s rage begins to boil over once again, but it seems that the device that Paragus was using to keep Broly under control had malfunctioned, allowing Broly to transform into the Legendary Super Saiyan. Paragus then reveals his true plan: taking over the Earth and creating a true New Planet Vegeta by having Broly destroy all of the Z Fighters while also exacting his revenge on King Vegeta by killing his son. He also tells the group that a comet is going to collide with the planet they are on as well, limiting the time they have to defeat Broly and escape safely.

The Z Fighters take turns fighting Broly but are all swiftly taken down by the rampaging giant. Vegeta, strangely enough, refuses to fight because of Broly’s sheer amount of strength as the Legendary Super Saiyan. Piccolo appears with a few Senzu beans to help some of the fighters recover while also dragging Vegeta out to the battlefield and forcing him to fight. Although he is a bit more willing now, he still proves no match for Broly. Paragus attempts to flee, but is stopped by his own son, who crushes his escape pod and flings him into the approaching comet. In a final last stand, Goku asks for the Z Fighters to give him their energy. Vegeta is a bit stubborn, but eventually agrees. This energy finally gives Goku enough strength to defeat the Legendary Super Saiyan, but they still need to make their way off of the planet soon, as the comet is still flying towards them.

Everyone uses the ship that Piccolo used to get to the planet, though Goku uses Instant Transmission to bring himself and Gohan back to their home. They are confronted by an angry Chi-Chi, who did not appreciate Goku skipping out on the school meeting earlier.

New Characters

  • Broly: a Saiyan born with a power level many times higher than several grown warriors. King Vegeta felt threatened by such a powerful child and had Broly executed, though he survived. His childhood trauma caused him to be rather mentally unstable, resulting in fits of uncontrollable rage.

  • Paragus: Broly’s father. He begged for his King to spare Broly, but was instead beaten nearly to death. Although he survived, Paragus swore that he would take revenge one day.
