Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle is a free to play mobile game based on the internationally popular Japanese manga and anime series Dragon Ball, both written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama. The series was published in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1984 to 1995 and the anime continues to be aired. The series follows the adventures of the main protagonist, Son Goku, who strives to be the strongest warrior in the entire universe. It is a popular series with many fans around the world. It is said to be one of the most memorable animated action/comedy series of all time.

The game was developed by Akatsuki Inc. and produced by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It was released in Japan on January 30, 2015 for Android and February 19, 2015 for iOS. The game was later released worldwide on July 16, 2015. Currently, the game has exceeded 300 million downloads worldwide with approximately over $2 billion in worldwide revenue.

Gameplay

The game features elements of board, color matching puzzle and card game genres. The player plays as an unnamed fighter and must stop the expansion of the dimensional distortion. Together with future Trunks and King Kai, the player must complete quests and progress through the original story.

In order to defeat the enemy, the player must tap the Ki Spheres that pops up on the battle screen between the character and the enemy. The Ki Spheres are mutiple orbs with different colors and the player can match different orbs to command the character to attack or use other abilities. By selecting the Ki Spheres, the character will defeat enemies with powerful and iconic finishing moves also shown in the anime.

The player can create their own Dragon Ball team and fight alongside their favorite character or even team up with enemies from the anime, such as Frieza, Cell or Majin Buu. Playable characters are unlocked either by progressing through the game and using in game items or in-app purchases. Players can also experience using the signature moves from characters such as Goku's Kamehameha and Vegeta’s Final Flash attack. In addition, characters can be trained to unlock new skills and to awaken them to surpass their limit. The player can make their own ultimate team by considering the characters different attributes and categories.

The game includes a number of modes. The Story Mode which is an original story with characters from across the anime or the mode to face off strong opponents. The player can also play in the World Martial Arts Tournament. For true advanced players, there are challenging modes like Extreme Z-Battle and Super Battle Road.

Within 3 months from the release in Japan (February, 2015) the game reached 15 million downloads and reached 100 million downloads the following year in November 2016, after it was released worldwide. By July 2017, the game had been released in 50 countries and reached 200 million downloads as it placed number 1 on the App store in 16 countries. By August 2018, the game exceeded 250 million downloads worldwide and recorded over 300 million downloads the following year.

Between 2017 and 2018, the game has grossed at least ¥73.9 billion ($669 million) in Japan. In 2017, it grossed approximately ¥2.8 billion ($25 million) in China and $6.18 million in the United States. By July 2018, the game has grossed over $1 billion in worldwide revenue, approximately $400 million outside of Japan and about $200 million in the United States. Five years since the release, the game has currently grossed approximately over $2 billion in worldwide revenue.

Metacritic is a well known website that aggregates reviews of films, TV shows, music albums, video games and books. The site reviewed this game and gave a score of 71 out of 100. TouchArcade is a mobile game news website. It also reviewed this game and gave a score of 3 out of 5 stars. On the Apple Store, the game has a high rating of 4.7 out of 5 with over 73,600 ratings. It also has a rating of 4.7 on Google Play with more than 900,000 reviews.
