OtapediaBojack Unbound Movie - Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound is a Japanese fantasy and martial arts film that is based on Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball manga. It debuted on July 10th, 1993 at the Toei Anime Film Fair. Bojack Unbound is the final film to feature Kohei Miyauchi as Master Roshi, as he later passed away around two years after its release. The film was directed by Yoshihiro Ueda, produced by both Chiaki Imada and Yoshio Anzai, written by Takao Koyama, and has music composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi. Overall, the film earned 2.23 billion yen in the box office after its release.

Summary

The film begins with a martial arts tournament called the Intergalactic Tournament, where 200 of the top fighters in the “galaxy” compete for a cash prize and a chance to fight Mr. Satan. Many of the Z Fighters enter the competition, including Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, Yamcha, Future Trunks, and Tien. Everyone but Yamcha advance to the next round and Mr. Satan gets increasingly worried about who his opponent will be. He says that he has a stomach ache and excuses himself.

The semi-final round has Trunks against Tien and Krillin against Piccolo. Although Trunks and Tien are more or less on equal ground at the beginning of their match, Trunks turns into a Super Saiyan and quickly claims victory. Meanwhile, Piccolo simply forfeits his match against Krillin because he simply doesn’t see Krillin as a worthy opponent. The final round has Gohan, Trunks, Krillin, and another fighter fight against opponents that are supposed to be from all over the galaxy, but are in reality pupils of Mr. Satan. The tournament staff is surprised, however, as the fighters that appear are not the people they had hired. Despite this, everyone is moved to a new arena with a variety of environments.

The fighters quickly learn that something isn’t right, as the fighters are using lethal force in a tournament setting. Each of the remaining Z Fighters attempts to take down the strange enemies to varying levels of success. Krillin is quickly defeated, while Trunks is able to kill one of the enemies after turning into a Super Saiyan. Vegeta begins to sense the energies of the fighters and believes that something has gone wrong. Meanwhile, Gohan is led toward Krillin and Trunks’ location, where he meets the main antagonist, Bojack. After seeing his friends hurt, Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan, though he is still not strong enough to defeat all of the fighters. Piccolo steps into to save Gohan while Trunks attempts to challenge Bojack once again. Trunks dashes toward Bojack, but gets caught in a trap that saps all of his energy. Vegeta then makes his appearance, frees Trunks, and launches an attack of his own. However, like all of the fighters before him, he is easily outclassed by Bojack.

Despite everyone being battered and bruised, the fight continues on. Goku nervously watches the fight from King Kai’s planet and tries to cheer Gohan on as much as he can. He seems to be fighting a losing battle, however, as he simply can’t muster enough strength to defeat Bojack and his subordinates. Before Bojack is able to unleash the final blow, Goku decides that he has had enough and uses Instant Transmission to teleport to Gohan and save him (despite being dead). In the few fleeting moments he has, Goku tells his son to believe in himself because he has incredible power that has yet to tap in to. This visit is enough to push Gohan over the edge and he uses his Super Saiyan 2 form. Two of the henchmen try to use their energy-draining wire trap on Gohan, but they prove to be useless. Gohan then kills both of them with a single blow each. Bojack, now threatened, uses his last subordinate as a shield and blasts through her to try and catch Gohan off-guard, though this is also ineffective. Before Bojack realizes it, Gohan punches a hole in his stomach, severely injuring the foe. In a final last stand, Bojack launches the strongest energy attack he can, though it is easily overwhelmed by Super Saiyan 2 Gohan. After the battle is won, Mr. Satan is announced as the winner, though the Z Fighters know who truly won. The group celebrates, though Vegeta and Piccolo both isolate themselves from the festivities.

New Characters

  • Bojack: the main antagonist of the film. He is the leader of a group named the Galaxy Soldiers, which is made up of himself and his henchmen seen in the movie. He used to lead his subordinates across the galaxy in an attempt to conquer everything in their path, but Bojack was eventually caught by the four Kais and trapped inside of a star. After King Kai’s death during the Cell Games, however, Bojack was released.

  • Galaxy Soldiers: Aside from Bojack, there are four members of the Galaxy Soldiers, Bido, Kogu, Zangya, and Bujin. Bido is a tall, muscular man with a goatee and a mohawk that often works together with Bujin. Bujin is much leaner than Bido and often uses psychic abilities like his wire traps. Kogu is the swordsman of the group while Zangya is the only female. Unlike all of the other members of the Galaxy Soldiers, Zangya is actually killed by her leader, Bojack. Both Zangya and Bojack later have a cameo appearance in Fusion Reborn.
