Synopsis

Kimihiko, a young man who often gets unintentionally caught up in various incidents, becomes the assistant to an angelic girl and brilliant detective named Siesta, and the two spend three years together globetrotting and fighting against evildoers on dazzling adventures. But they are forced to part ways when one such adventure leads to Siesta’s death. Over a year has passed since that turbulent time, and Kimihiko, having returned to his normal life as a student, is now in his third year of high school. However, a chance encounter with a classmate will lead him on an epic adventure that will connect the past and the present.

Background

The Detective Is Already Dead is a light novel series written by Nigoju and illustrated by Umibozu that has been published by Media Factory under their MF Bunko J imprint since November 2019. That same year, it also won the 15th MF Bunko J newcomer award. As of November 2020, four volumes have been published. The light novel is licensed for English release in North America through Yen Press.

A manga adaptation illustrated by Mugiko has been serialized in Media Factory’s Monthly Comic Alive magazine since May 2020 and has been released in a single tankobon volume as of November 2020. Yen Press has also licensed the manga for English release in North America.

An anime adaptation was announced in January 2021. It is being animated by ENGI and features Manabu Kurihara (Bleach, High School Fleet, Tokyo Ghoul) as director with Deko Akao (Arakawa Under the Bridge, Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?, If My Favorite Pop Idol Made it to the Budokan, I Would Die) handling series composition and Yosuke Ito (Hensuki: Are You Willing to Fall in Love with a Pervert, as Long as She's a Cutie?, Hybrid x Heart Magias Academy Ataraxia, Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse) handling character designs. The anime’s ending theme song is "Kodo" by Kagura Nana. The anime will premiere in Japan on July 4, 2021 on AT-X, Tokyo MX, and other channels.

Characters

Kimihiko Kimizuka (Voiced by: Shin Nagai)
An 18-year-old high school student. He has a natural tendency to get caught up in things and has encountered various incidents since childhood, so he is used to dealing with unforeseen situations. He used to be Siesta's assistant, but since her death he has been living a normal high school life.

Siesta (Voiced by: Saki Miyashita)
A brilliant detective and woman of many talents. Her age and real name are unknown, and many aspects of her life are shrouded in mystery. As a great detective, she believed in protecting the interests of her clients. She died while on a case with Kimihiko a year ago.

Nagisa Natsunagi (Voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu)
A girl who goes to school with Kimihiko. She is intuitive and often takes bold actions. She employs Kimihiko’s services as a great detective in order to find a certain person.

Yui Saikawa (Voiced by: Kanon Takao)
A 14-year-old middle school student who sings and dances as a national idol. She is loved by people of all ages for her outstanding looks and is in high demand by magazines and television. She is always full of energy and innocence, but she sometimes talks in a strange manner. She comes to Kimihiko with a certain request.

Charlotte Arisaka Anderson (Voiced by: Saho Shirasu)
A 17-year-old girl with roots in both America and Japan. She has received a strict education from her military parents and is capable of performing a variety of missions despite her age. Her fighting skills are very high, but she isn’t good at strategy. She called Siesta "Ma'am" and adored her, and she sees her assistant Kimizuka as a rival.

Chameleon (Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu)
A slender man with silver hair. He is of Asian descent, but as an artificial human he is able to blend into the background and become invisible. He has a tongue that can extend 10 meters like a tentacle.

Komori (Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka)
A 34-year-old blonde-haired half-human from Scandinavia. He has amazing hearing abilities but has no eyesight. He is the person who caused the incident where Kimihiko and Siesta met, and after the incident his existence was hidden by the Japanese police.
