Synopsis

U.C. 0105 - Twelve years after the Second Neo Zeon War. Peace on Earth is disrupted by a terrorist organization named Mafty whose goal is to prevent the privatization of Earth by the Earth Federation. They are led by Mafty Navue Erin whose real name is Hathaway Noa, the son of the famous Bright Noa. Led by his ideals, his fate takes a turn when he meets Federation Colonel Kenneth Slegg and a beautiful, mysterious woman named Gigi Andalucia.

Background

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash (also known as Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway) is a novel series written by Yoshiyuki Tomino that was first published by Kadokawa Shoten under their Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko label from February 1989 to April 1990 and released in three volumes. The series is an official part of the Gundam metaseries and acts as a sequel to the novel Beltorchika's Children.

A manga adaptation by Uroaki Sabashi began serialization in Gundam Ace magazine in April 2021 after a prologue that was published in March 2020. As of May 2021, it has been published in one collected tankobon volume under Kadokawa’s Kadokawa Comics Ace imprint.

A film trilogy adaptation was first announced at a presentation for the “Mobile Suit Gundam 40th Anniversary Project” held in November 2018 as part of the “UC NexT 0100" project commemorating the 40th anniversary of the franchise. The trilogy is being directed by Shukou Murase with Yasuyuki Muto handling the screenplay, Pablo Uchida, Naoyuki Onda, and Shigeki Kuhara handling the character designs, Hajime Katoki, Kimitoshi Yamane, Nobuhiko Genba, and Seiichi Nakatani handling the mechanical designs, and Hiroyuki Sawano composing the music. The first film in the trilogy was originally scheduled to be released in July 2020 but was postponed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was instead released in Japanese theaters on June 11, 2021. Since its release in a record 214 theaters throughout Japan, it has topped 1 billion yen in box office revenue, becoming the first Gundam film since 1988’s Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack to do so. The film will be available to stream in the U.S. through Netflix beginning on July 1.
