Synopsis

Naoya Mukai is a first-year high school student who has been in love with his childhood friend Saki since elementary school. After years of asking her out, she finally accepts and he is on cloud 9. But things get complicated when a cute classmate named Nagisa Minase takes an interest in him, even going as far as making him lunch! Suddenly finding himself with two girls who want to date him, and not being able to make a decision, he comes up with a plan: why not date them both!

Background

Girlfriend, Girlfriend is a manga series written and illustrated by Hiroyuki that has been serialized in Kodansha’s shonen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Magazine since March 2020 and has been released in six collected tankobon volumes as of June 17, 2021.

An anime adaptation was announced in the 51st issue of Weekly Shonen Magazine in November 2020. It is being animated by Tezuka Productions and features Satoshi Kuwabara (Adachi and Shimamura, Dagashi Kashi 2, How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord Omega) as director with Keiichiro Ochi (La Corda d'Oro Blue Sky, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax, Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion the Animation) handling series composition, Akiko Toyoda (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind) handling character designs, and Miki Sakurai (Aggretsuko, Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!) and Tatsuhiko Saiki (Aggretsuko: We Wish You a Metal Christmas, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!) composing the music. The opening theme song is "Fuzaketenaize" by Necrytalkie, and the ending theme song is "Pinky Hook” by Momo Asakura. The anime will premiere in Japan on July 2, 2021 during the Animeism programming block on MBS, TBS, BS-TBS.

Characters

Naoya Mukai (Voiced by: Junya Enoki)
A first-year high school student who is always true to himself and never tells lies. He is a serious and honest person, but he can be indecisive and takes things more seriously than necessary. He began asking out his childhood friend Saki during his first year of elementary school and continued to do so every month until she finally said yes after they became high school students. However, he is also attracted to Nagisa, who confesses her feelings for him at the same time, and, not being able to choose between them, he proposes dating them both.

Saki (Voiced by: Ayane Sakura)
A first-year high school student and Naoya’s childhood friend who becomes his first girlfriend after years of turning him down. She is cheerful and energetic. She has had feelings for Naoya since elementary school but refused to start a relationship with him until she entered high school due to her thinking he was too pushy and his confessions were too serious. She is thrown for a loop when Naoya suggests seeing multiple people, but she reluctantly agrees after getting to know Nagisa. Her nickname is “Saki Saki.”

Nagisa Minase (Voiced by: Azumi Waki)
A first-year high school student and Naoya’s second girlfriend. She is classmates with Naoya and Saki. She has an admirable and modest personality and always tries her best. She is good at cooking.

Rika Hoshizaki (Voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu)
A first-year high school student who is extremely popular with the male students due to her beautiful looks. She is active as a popular bishoujo streamer named Mirika, which she keeps secret from both her parents and the school. Due to being a streamer, she has more money than a high schooler normally should. She is also a tsundere.

Shino Kiryu (Voiced by: Rie Takahashi)
A first-year high school student who is at the top of her class academically. She is close friends with Saki and is on the basketball team with her. She worries about Saki’s relationship with Naoya.
