The Pretty Boy Detective Club - an unofficial, non-profit organization that works in secret in the Yubiwa Academy Middle School and solves all kinds of problems. Their base is an unused art room which has been renovated so beautifully it’s hard to believe that it’s part of the school. Mayumi Dojima is a second-year student who gets involved with the eccentric members of the Pretty Boy Detective Club after they help her track down a star she had long been searching for. Before long, she becomes a full-fledged member and is swept up in their world of excitement, intrigue, and beauty!

Background

Pretty Boy Detective Club is a novel series written by NisiOisn of Monogatari fame and illustrated by Kinako that was published by Kodansha under their Kodansha Taiga imprint from October 2015 to December 2019. The 12th volume will be released in May 2021. A manga adaptation illustrated by Suzuka Oda began serialization in the shojo manga magazine Aria in April 2016 and was later moved to the shonen manga magazine Shonen Magazine Edge in October 2018 until it came to an end in July 2019. The manga has since been released in five tankobon volumes. The novel and manga have both been licensed by Vertical for English release in North America.

An anime adaptation was announced with the release of the 10th volume of the novel in November 2019. It is being animated by SHAFT and features Akiyuki Simbo as chief director, Hajime Ohtani as director, and Kenjiro Okada as assistant director, with Hiroki Yamamura handling animation character designs and EFFY and Masatomo Ota composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is “Shake & Shake” sumika. The anime will premiere in Japan on April 10, 2021 as part of the "ANiMAZiNG!!!" late-night programming block on ABC TV, TV Asahi, and other channels.

Characters

Mayumi Dojima (Voiced by: Maaya Sakamoto)
The protagonist and narrator of the series. She is a second-year Yubiwa Academy Middle School student who becomes involved with the Pretty Boy Detective Club after solving a case about a star she had been searching for for 10 years. She often dresses as a boy and visits the clubroom, and has become a regular member since the “Pretty Boy in the Attic.” She has overly exceptional eyesight and wears glasses to suppress it. She is also known as “Mayumi the Seer.”

Manabu Sotоin (Voiced by: Ayumu Murase)
A fifth grader at Yubiwa Academy Elementary School. His nickname is Kogoro. He is the leader of the Pretty Boy Detective Club. He is also known as "Manabu the Aesthete." Mayumi calls him “Leader.” He claims to be uneducated and acts without reading the room, but he always seeks out beauty and won’t do anything that goes against that aesthetic. Although he often only gives orders, he is recognized by the group as its leader.

Nagahiro Sakaguchi (Voiced by: Taito Ban)
A third-year student at Yubiwa Academy Middle School and the former student council president. He is the vice leader of the Pretty Boy Detective Club. He is also known as "Nagahiro the Orator." He has a fiancee who is a six-year-old first grader and he is often ridiculed for being a lolicon even though the pairing is entirely his parents’ idea. He was the student council president for three consecutive years since his speech as the representative of the new students during orientation. He has a beautiful voice and is good at public speaking as well as copying other people’s voices. He is the liaison officer of the Detective Boys.

Michiru Fukuroi (Voiced by: Toshiki Masuda)
A second-year student at Yubiwa Academy Middle School. His nickname is "Michiru the Epicure.” He is a dangerous person who tops the ranking of students you definitely shouldn’t have anything to do with and is known as a gang leader outside of school. However, he is actually family oriented and a good cook. He also has a habit of using a lot of satirical metaphors.

Hyota Ashikaga (Voiced by: Shougo Yano)
A first-year student at Yubiwa Academy Middle School. He is the ace of the track team. His nickname is "Hyota the Adonis." He has modified his uniform to look like shorts. Ever since he started wearing it that way, all the girls who saw it stopped shortening their skirts and started wearing black stockings. He has well-developed features and is made fun of for being like the archangel who bosses the other angels around. He insists on exposing his legs even during winter. Pretty Boy Detective Club’s strength and mobility team. Despite looking cute, he often behaves carelessly and makes dangerous comments. He has been kidnapped three times in the past. His parents are divorced.

Sоsaku Yubiwa (Voiced by: Gen Sato)
A first-year student at Yubiwa Academy Middle School. His nickname is "Sosaku the Artiste." He is the heir to the Yubiwa Foundation, the parent organization of Yubiwa Academy, and is the de facto president of the group. He is part of the Pretty Boy Detective Club’s art team. He is expressionless and is a man of few words, and only Manabu can read his thoughts.

Rei (Voiced by: Hiroki Nanami)
The leader of the “Twenties,” a group of illegal couriers. Her nickname is "Twenty Faces of Beauty." Though not a good person, she is beautiful and cares for her friends.

Rai Fudatsuki (Voiced by: Kousuke Toriumi)
A second-year student at Kamikazari Middle School and the student council president. He is charismatic and ambitious, and he runs a casino called Reasonable Doubt. He is involved with a private weapons company and reports on their products.
