Synopsis

Set in a fictional spacefaring universe in which humans, aliens, and sentient robots live, Shiki Granbell is the sole-human inhabitant of a planet of robots called Granbell and is an Ether Gear user who is able to control gravity. One day, the planet is visited by a girl named Rebecca Bluegarden, an amateur B-Cuber who is recording videos for her online account, and her cat robot compassion Happy. After befriending the two, Shiki leaves the planet in order to journey into the cosmos in search of new friends and Mother, the creator of the universe. Before long, he is given an interstellar warship named Edens Zero and begins traveling the cosmos together with Rebecca and Happy and making new friends along the way.

Background

Edens Zero began as a manga series written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima of Fairy Tail fame. The series has been serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine since June 2018, and 13 tankobon volumes have been published as of January 2021. The manga is licensed for English release in North America by Kodansha USA. Two video game adaptations were announced at Tokyo Game Show 2020. Both are being developed by Konami, and one is a console game while the other is a mobile game.

An anime adaptation was announced in June 2020 by Mashima via Twitter. It is being directed by Yushi Suzuki at J.C.Staff and features Shinji Ishihira as chief director, Mitsutaka Hirota handling series composition and screenplay, Yurika Sako handling character designs, and Yoshihisa Hirano composing the music. It will premiere in Japan on Apri. 10, 2021 on NTV.

Characters

Shiki Granbell (Voiced by: Takuma Terashima)
A boy who lived with machines on the theme park planet Granbell. He is an Ether Gear user and is able to control gravity, allowing him to fly around freely. After leaving the planet, his first goal is to make 100 friends and find Mother, and he begins his adventure together with Rebecca.

Rebecca Bluegarden (Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu)
An amateur B-Cuber who runs the online account Aoneko Channel and whose videos are unpopular and have a low amount of views. She is also a registered adventurer but her rank is low. After meeting Shiki on Granbell, she joins his search for Mother in an attempt to raise her views and popularity.

Happy (Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya)
A cat who is Rebecca’s friend and partner. He originally lost his life in a car accident when Rebecca was a child, but Dr. Weisz mechanized his entire body and revived him as an android. He is able to transform himself into a pair of firearms called Happy Blasters.

**Weisz Steiner ** (Voiced by: Hiromichi Tezuka)
A young man from the planet Norma who uses the Ether Gear "Machina Maker," which allows him to freely modify machines. He flees his planet before 50 years of its history are consumed by the Chronophage, which results in him splitting into two autonomous selves. After a battle with his former partner, Sibir, he joins Shiki and the others.

E.M. Pino (Voiced by: Shiori Izawa)
An “anti-machine” android that uses EMP bursts to temporarily disable machines. Her memory is damaged and she doesn’t know what she was created for, but she dreams of becoming human.

Homura Kogetsu (Voiced by: Shiki Aoki)
A young swordswoman and the wielder of the Ether Gear "Soul Blade." She joins Shiki’s crew on the Edens Zero in order to search for her master, Valkyrie, who disappeared. She lacks a social filter and tends to say whatever she is thinking.
