Synopsis

Having defeated the Nerillian space invaders, humanity has expanded its settlements throughout the solar system and is enjoying its prosperity. One hundred years later… Humanity is in a frenzy over a huge athletic tournament to crown the Cosmic Beauty, and girls from all over the solar system have gathered together to engage in fierce battles to become the best in the universe. Kanata Akehoshi is the representative from Earth who aims to become the Cosmic Beauty in order to fulfill a promise she made to herself when she was a child. After succeeding in making it through the qualifying round in Antarctica, she arrives at the tournament and is reunited with a girl she made a promise to. With their courage, hope, and pride on the line, the girls’ passionate sports battle begins!

Background

Battle Athletes is a cross-media series that spans an OVA series, manga, and a TV anime. The series began with a manga written by Yuki Nakano that was serialized by ASCII Media Works from March 1997 to November 1998 and published by Dengeki Comics in four tankobon volumes. A six-episode OVA series produced by AIC and directed by Kazuhiro Ozawa was released between May 1997 and June 1998. The TV anime series, titled Battle Athletes Victory, aired between October 1997 and March 1998 and spanned 26 episodes. Rather than being a sequel to the OVA, it retells the events in a completely new way. Both the OVA and anime were released by Geneon on home video in North America.

Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART! is a new TV anime being produced by studio Seven and directed by Noriyoshi Sasaki with Yohei Kashii handling series composition, Kazunori Haruyama handling character designs, and hisakuni, Kazuki Tomita, Kenta Yokochi, Shingo Yamazaki, Takuma Sogi, Yasuhiro Gasa, and Yuko Takahashi composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Cobalt no Kodo" by Nanaka Suwa, and the ending theme song is “Sakura Maichiru Yoru ni" by Reina Kondo. The anime will premiere in Japan on April 10, 2021. Funimation has picked up the series for streaming in North America.

Characters

Kanata Akehoshi (Voiced by: Sumire Morohoshi)
A good-natured girl and the daughter of a potato farmer. She is the representative of Earth. She has been training in farming since she can remember, so she has outstanding physical strength and abilities. She has a cheerful, generous personality. She loves and respects her grandmother, who taught her how to play sports.

Eva Gallenstein (Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa)
A superhuman shrouded in mystery. She is the representative of the Von Esclavo Colony. She has superhuman abilities and is at the top of her game in every competition. She doesn’t interact with the other representatives, and her origins and identity are completely unknown. She is expressionless and emotionless at all times. Kanata seems to know her.

Shelley Wong (Voiced by: Miyu Tomita)
A hard-working girl who strives to confront despair. She is the representative of Venus. She is the daughter of the prominent Wong family that has long held the dream of athletic excellence. Though her family had high expectations of her achieving this dream, she had a serious accident that resulted in her losing her right arm and left leg. After refusing to give up, and through unimaginable efforts, she became the representative of Venus against all odds. She hates being pitied more than anything else.

Yana Christopher (Voiced by: Saori Hayami)
The representative of Luna. She comes from a religious people known as the Beginners. She was made a refugee due to an ongoing civil war on Luna and aims to become the Cosmic Beauty to help bring the conflict to an end. She has a long-standing rivalry with her friend from the war who she competed against for the title of Luna’ representative. She has a space kangaroo from her time in the war that she brings along with her.

Lydia Gurtland (Voiced by: Akari Kito)
The representative of Mars. She is the daughter of the CEO of the Gurtland Group, a huge corporation that is hated as merchants of death. Because of this, others avoid her, and she has developed a haughty and violent temperament as a result. Despite her small size, she aims to use her strong mental fortitude to become the Cosmic Beauty.

Paglira Respigh (Voiced by: Hikaru Nanjo)
The representative of Pluto. She is also a genius doctor and excels in both the arts and sciences. She wants to become the Cosmic Beauty in order to develop Pluto’s medical technology. She is always smiling and friendly but she also has a calculating side and keeps her true feelings hidden.
