Background

Urusei Yatsura began as a manga series written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi that was serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine from 1978 to 1987. Since its release, the manga has become one of the best-selling manga of all time, having over 35 million copies in print. It won the Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category in 1980 and the 18th Seiun Award for Best Comic category in 1987.

The series’ first TV anime series was broadcast from 1981 to 1986, spanning 195 episodes. It was produced by Kitty Films, Pierrot (episodes 1-106), and Studio Deen (episodes 107-195) and was directed by Mamoru Oshii (episodes 1-106) and Kazuo Yamazaki (episodes 107-195).

It is being produced by david production and features Hideya Takahashi and Yasuhiro Kimura as directors, with Yuuko Kakihara handing series composition, Naoyuki Asano handling character designs, Kazuhiro Takamura and Mikio handling sub-character designs, and Masaru Yokoyama composing the music. The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 13, 2022 during Fuji TV’s noitaminA programming block and will run for two consecutive cours (quarter of a year). It will be streamed overseas through HIDIVE.

Characters

Ataru Moroboshi (Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya)
Ataru is the unluckiest and most lecherous student who attends Tomobiki High School. His hobby is prowling for girls. He is called “Darling” by Lum. He has the vitality of a phoenix and is undeterred by Lum’s electrical shocks when she suspects him of cheating.

Lum (Voiced by: Sumire Uesaka)
Lum is the cutest (and sometimes brutal) Oni girl. She follows Ataru and ends up living on Earth. She is puzzled by others wondering why such a cute girl as herself would want to be with Ataru, but she is fully devoted to him. As she would say, electricity is an expression of love.

Shinobu Miyake (Voiced by: Maaya Uchida)
Shinobu is Ataru’s classmate and childhood friend. Since Lum began living on Earth, there has been a weird love triangle between the three of them. She is a cute girl with a lovely appearance and superhuman strength, and though she tends to get pushed around by those around her with overbearing personalities, she seems to enjoy herself quite a bit.

Shutaro Mendo (Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano)
Shutaro is a transfer student to Tomobiki High School who is the son and heir to the Mendo Zaibatsu conglomerate and comes from inordinate wealth. Due to his background and charming looks, he was initially overwhelmingly popular with female students, but as his personality is slowly revealed, his classmates begin treating him as badly as Ataru.

Cherry (Voiced by: Wataru Takagi)
Cherry is a traveling monk whose name in kanji means “deranged monk.” When he sees Ataru, he says that he has an ominous look, and his bad premonitions sometimes come true.

Sakura (Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro)
Sakura is a beautiful girl with perfect style. She is a shrine maiden and warns Ataru that he will have “women trouble.”

Ran (Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa)
Ran is Lum’s childhood friend. She travels from space and transfers into Tomobiki High School as a student. However, her true intention for doing so is a mystery. She normally dresses as a pretty girl who plays innocent and helpless, but her true nature comes out when it’s just her and Lum together.

Rei (Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi)
Rei is a handsome young Oni man. Though quiet at first, he suddenly changes when he sees food. He comes to Earth following after Lum.

Oyuki (Voiced by: Saori Hayami)
Oyuki is Lum’s childhood friend and the snow queen of Neptune. She normally is quiet and gives a refined impression, but she becomes dangerous when she’s angry. She carries her account book with her and is merciless where business is concerned, even if it’s with a friend.

Benten (Voiced by: Shizuka Ishigami)
Benten is Lum’s childhood friend and is named after Benzaiten, one of the Seven Gods of Luck. She is a beautiful, determined girl who rides a motorcycle. She has a yearly event with Lum for setsubun in which Lum and her “Oni Army” go up against Benten and her “Gods of Luck Army.”

Princess Kurama (Voiced by: Nana Mizuki)
Kurama is the princess of the Karasutengu aliens. Due to there being no males on her homeworld, she comes to Earth in search of a husband.

Onsen Mark (Voiced by: Kenta Miyake)
Mark is an English teacher at Tomobiki High School. He gets stressed out by his students who are all problem children, including Ataru and Shutaro.

Tsubame Ozono (Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai)
