Synopsis
Hirofumi Satake is a death row inmate who brutally murdered his fiancée, Chie. He is an undead man who continually comes back from the brink of death when cornered. After catching the interest of the Human Bug University, an institute dedicated to studying strange phenomena and the people at the center of them, he becomes the subject of their research and shares memories of his misfortunate daily life as an undead. Why did he kill his fiancée? The truth will bring to light a huge conspiracy…
Background
Human Bug Daigaku_Yami no Manga started as a YouTube manga themed after the darkness of humanity. The videos feature true stories that have occurred around the world, often focusing on the underworld of society and crime. The channel launched in March 2019 and has over 1.5 million followers and has been viewed over 1.6 billion times as of September 2022.
A TV anime adaptation was announced in May 2022. It is being produced by DLE (Ani × Para: Anata no Hero wa Dare Desu ka, Haiyoru! Nyaruani: Remember My Mr. Lovecraft, Mugyutto! Black Clover) and features Tsukasa Nishiyama (Bakemonogatari, Hayate the Combat Butler!!, Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens) as director and character designer, Naotoshi Nakajima (mini vanguard Large, Record) as series composer, and Kosuke Yamashita (Chihayafuru, Hana Yori Dango Final, Puzzle & Dragons X) as music composer. The anime’s opening theme song is "Catastrophe” by NANO, and the ending theme song is “Bad City (Bug Human)” by Lowland Jazz. The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 5, 2022 on Tokyo MX before broadcasting on BS Fuji and Sun TV beginning the following day. It will also be streamed overseas through Crunchyroll as part of their autumn 2022 lineup.
Characters
Hirofumi Satake (Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita)
Hirofumi is an undead man who has encountered all kinds of deadly misfortunes, incidents, accidents, and illnesses but has always scraped by. However, he considers himself to be an ordinary, run-of-the-mill guy. He is sentenced to death for the murder of his fiancée.
Chie Negishi (Voiced by: Yui Ogura)
Chie was Hirofumi’s fiancée. She enjoyed backpacking. She tried her best to support Hirofumi, who had been suffering from daily misfortunes. However, Hirofumi kills her.
Joji Kito (Voiced by: Hiroki Takahashi)
Joji is a hunter of strange foods and unexplored regions. He doesn’t just love strange things but also has an underlying respect for local cultures and their cuisine. He comes into contact with Hirofumi and admires his guts and gusto.
Shigeo Ijuin (Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu)
Shigeo is a “torture sommelier” who executes evildoers who escape the justice of the law. He is well-versed in all forms of torture from all time periods. To his clients, he is very gentlemanly and merciful, but he shows no mercy to those he tortures.
Tadashi Shimoda (Voiced by: Yuma Uchida)
Tadashi is a young prison guard at the prison where death row inmate Hirofumi is incarcerated who begins to deepen his relationship with Hirofumi.
Jack (Voiced by: Soma Saito)
Jack is a man who shows an unusual obsession with Chie. He is an “international stalker” who pursues his targets across national borders.
Takao Rukawa (Voiced by: Ryota Suzuki)
Takao is the “torture assistant” who helps Shigeo. He is a refreshing and likable young man, but due to his strong sense of justice, he is unforgiving to criminals.
Chihaya Godai (Voiced by: Hikaru Midorikawa)
Chihaya is an informant who is active in the underworld. His information is so solid it even surpasses that of the police. He is also trusted by Shigeo.
Professor (Voiced by: Hidenari Ugaki)
Professor is a mysterious man who is researching Hirofumi. His real name is unknown.
