Synopsis

Suzume Iwato, a 17-year-old high school girl who lives together with her aunt in a quiet town in Kyushu, meets a young man on a journey to “find the doors.” Following after him, Suzume happens upon ruins deep in the mountains, where she finds an old, weathered door standing alone among the rubble. As if drawn to it for some reason, she reaches her hand out to the door…

Soon, doors begin opening one after the other all over Japan. But due to the disasters that come through from the other side, the doors that have been opened must be closed. Stars, the setting sun, and the morning sky. Within that place, it’s like all of time has melted into the sky. Drawn in by this strange door, Suzume’s journey to close them is about to begin.

Background

Suzume no Tojimari is an upcoming animated film being produced by CoMix Wave Films. It is director Makoto Shinkai’s first new film since 2019’s Weathering with You. Work began on the film in January 2020 and it was officially unveiled during a press conference in December 2021. Along with directing, Shinkai is also writing the screenplay, and other staff include Masayoshi Tanaka as character designer, Kenichi Tsuchiya as animation director, Takumi Tanji as art director, and Kazuma Jinnouchi and RADWIMPS who are composing the music. The anime’s theme song is "Suzume" by TikTok performer Toaka. The film will begin screening in Japan on Nov. 11, 2022 and will be released outside of Asia through Crunchyroll.

The film stars actress Nanoka Hara, who is taking on her first voice-acting role in anime as the voice of main character Suzume, and Hokuto Matsumura of the idol group SixTONES, who is making his film voice acting debut as the voice of deuteragonist Sota Munakata.

A manga adaptation by Denki Amashima will begin serialization in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine beginning in the December 2022 issue, and a novel adaptation penned by Shinkai was also published under Kodansha’s Kadokawa Bunko imprint in August 2022.
