OtapediaEvangelion Fifth Angel Ramiel

Ramiel is a Child of Adam and appears in Episodes 5 and 6 and is designated as the Fifth Angel named after the “Angel of Thunder”.

Physical Appearance

This Angel is drastically different in appearance when compared to the previous two Angels. While Sachiel is vaguely humanoid in shape and Shamshel has an insect-like body, Ramiel appears as a floating blue octahedron. The surface of this Angel is highly reflective, almost giving it a mirror-like sheen at times. As it hovers around, Ramiel lets out a noise that resembles a mix between a submarine’s sonar ping and a human singing voice. Although all Angels are considered to be living beings, Ramiel almost seems like an otherworldly machine. While it is capable of moving in the air, it is completely still when doing so. Its attacks are also impeccably precise. It is also capable of predicting enemy movements and planning accordingly. In the Rebuild movies, Ramiel is capable of morphing into a wide array of geometrical shapes and patterns when attacking. These different patterns may represent how Ramiel is going to attack, although it is not known for sure.

Notable Abilities

  • Beam Attack: One of the most notable aspects of Ramiel is its devastating beam. It only takes a short moment to charge and is able to instantly vaporize any matter it comes into contact with. Evangelion Units are not so easily disintegrated but can be quickly rendered useless in a matter of seconds if left unprotected. It is unknown how long Ramiel is able to sustain this beam attack, but it is possible that it can do so indefinitely.

  • Pinpoint Accuracy: If pure destructive force was not enough, Ramiel can accurately hit an enemy with its beam under circumstances that would hardly be possible by human standards, even with assistance. As long as an enemy is within a certain distance of the Angel, Ramiel will automatically target and hit their mark without fail. Obstacles and moving targets do not affect Ramiel’s accuracy, as its beam can blast through nearly any type of matter instantly. It is almost as if Ramiel can sense an enemy’s presence and can track their movements in real-time. As Evangelion Unit 01 is sent in to intercept Ramiel for the first time, sensors at NERV detect that Ramiel begins charging a beam attack while the Unit is still underground and fires it from behind a building the moment the unit breaches the surface.

  • Drill: Since Ramiel cannot be stopped by close-quarters combat, Ramiel can freely roam around Tokyo-3 and does so until it arrives above where NERV Headquarters is located. At this point, a red drill extends from the bottom of the Angel and begins to drill down into the ground. While this drill is fairly effective at penetrating the numerous layers of shielding and defense that NERV HQ has, it still takes Ramiel nearly 10 hours to tear through into the facility. Ramiel is the first Angel to successfully infiltrate NERV, although it is not entirely certain why Ramiel is attempting to enter the facility. In the first Rebuild movie, Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone, this drill is simply an extension of Ramiel’s original body that stretches down from the bottom and begins burrowing into the ground.

Battle and Defeat

Ramiel is discovered floating in the sky and [Evangelion Unit 01[(/otapedia/anime/neon_genesis_evangelion/unit_01) is sent to destroy it. Since there was little known about this Angel, NERV and Shinji were unprepared for Ramiel’s attack. Powerful energy readings are detected coming from the enemy as Evangelion Unit 01 is deployed to the surface and, before the final safety locks are released to allow movement of the Unit, Ramiel fires a beam attack that hits it directly in the chest. NERV panics and quickly tries to recall Shinji. As Shinji and the Unit drop back down into the ground, Ramiel’s beam can be seen following the unit’s movements until it is out of its range. While Evangelion Unit 01 is repaired and Shinji recovers, Misato directs several tests to try and learn more details about how Ramiel attacks. It is discovered that whenever the Angel detects a hostile enemy, it will automatically target and destroy it as long as it is in a specific range. Ramiel, completely unimpeded by enemies, begins drilling down toward NERV HQ.

After some calculations, NERV finds that it has approximately 10 hours to defeat the Angel before it breaches the facility. As close-range attacks would result in catastrophic defeat, Misato places her hopes in Shinji and creates a plan that utilizes an experimental weapon called a positron rifle that, in theory, would be enough to pierce Ramiel’s A.T. field and destroy its core. However, accomplishing this feat would require all of the country’s electricity to be routed into the weapon. That night, preparations are made to ready the positron rifle and Shinji takes his position while piloting Eva-01. The moment Shinji takes the shot, Ramiel returns fire, which alters the path of both beams, resulting in a near miss. Ramiel continues firing but is blocked by Rei and Eva-00 wielding a shield. This buys Shinji just enough time to fire a second shot that hits Ramiel’s core, resulting in the Angel’s death.
