The Evangelion franchise has made millions through Evangelion merchandise, toys and related goods on a global scale. The famous mecha Evangelion Units and pilots Shinji, Asuka and Rei are iconic in the global anime community.

The anime series that originally aired almost 25 years ago was quick to become a cultural phenomenon in the entire anime world. Even now it has millions of fans across the globe and it spawned a franchise, which includes films, manga, and other related goods.

With the introduction of the anime series to stream on Netflix and the release of the final Evangelion Rebuild movie, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 that is set to be released in Japan in June 2020, there has been a flood of new related goods being launched. One is the new Evangelion Funko Pops which is a toy that many Evangelion fans are waiting for.

What is a Funko Pop

Funko Pop is an American company founded in 1998 that specializes in manufacturing small vinyl figures (around 4 inches tall), which portray some of the most famous characters from all over the world. From the U.S, Funko Pop has created figures for famous series such as the Iron Man, Superman and The Hulk. In regards to Japanese anime, Funko Pop have created a series for big names such as One Piece, Dragon Ball and My Hero Academia.

The distinct feature of Funko Pop figures are that they have a deformed design. The characters have a very large head with large eyes and a very small body frame, giving them a cute and funny look.

With the growing popularity of comic book movies, TV series, and other media, Funko Pop’s line has grown by leaps and bounds – with a lot of figures released in the recent past. Funko Pop’s figures are so famous that they now have a line that depicts celebrities, pop stars, artists, and even real movie characters such as Harry Potter.

Funko Pop Evangelion Figures

Funko Pop has recently announced that it is making some brand new Funko Pops for Evangelion this year, which will include some of the most famous characters of the franchise including the protagonist Shinji Akari, Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley Soryu, and the very famous mecha Unit, Evangelion Unit 01 piloted by Shinji.

Funko Pop recently posted the first look of these new figurines on their official Twitter account, showing the three Evangelion pilots who work ceaselessly with NERV to save the world from Angel invasions and other dangers.

The picture also showed a “Supersized Pop”, which is a 6-inch Funko Pop depiction of the celebrated unit Evangelion Unit 01.

Funko Pop states on its website, “Adventure through the futuristic fortified city of Tokyo-3 with your favorite heroes including a 6” Pop! Eva Unit 01, Pop! Shinji Okari, Pop! Rei Ayanami, and Pop! Asuka Soryu Langley”

These new figures are set to join the existing Evangelion Funko Pops, which also include a special edition of Asuka in a school uniform, titled as “Summer Convention Asuka”.

Funko Pop Shinji Akari

Funko Pop Shinji Akari is the standard 4-inches tall figure that comes in a box with a display window. Shinji is wearing his trademark blue and light blue plug suit complete with head sensors. A sight that is familiar from the series. Shinji is also standing in his iconic pose of ‘Grabbing his wrist’, a habit Shinji had in the series when he was nervous or feeling anxious about his actions and decisions.

Funko Pop Rei Ayanami

Blue-haired Funko Pop Rei Ayanami is also in the standard size and comes in a similar box with a display window, like Pop! Shinji. She is wearing her trademark white plugsuit complete with head sensors. Rei is posed with her hands behind her back, perfectly portraying her shy and withdrawn personality.

Funko Pop Asuka Soryu Langley

Funko Pop Asuka Soryu Langley sports her red plugsuit, the same color as her Evangelion Unit 02 with electric head sensors in her brown-red hair. Asuka comes posed with her hands on her hips, a portrayal of confidence that was regularly seen in many scenes in the Evangelion anime.

Funko Pop Mecha Eva Unit 01

In addition to the 3 main characters of the anime series, Shinji Ikari’s Evangelion Unit, Eva Unit-01 is turned into a Funko Pop. Out of the new range of Evangelion Funko Pops, Evangelion Unit 01 is the only Funko Pop to come in the 6” model. An increased special size that would make Evangelion fans go crazy.

The purple and green figure features the armor in Eva Unit 01’s legs and arms in a fighting stance. The jet shaped face of the robot has white eyes along with red slashes.

Funko Pop Summer Collection Asuka

Prior to the designing of the new 4 Evangelion Funko Pops that are due for release in 2020, Funko Pop has previously released one Evangelion figure of Asuka Langley Soryu. A limited edition named the ‘Summer Collection’.

The Funko Pop featured Asuka in her school uniform in Tokyo-3 that was 3 3/4" tall and included her iconic red head sensors.
