Synopsis

In the fall of 2017, a young 17 year old is hit by a truck and spends the next 17 years in a coma. He wakes up to find his nephew Takafumi visiting him in the hospital and begins mumbling incoherently about how he had returned from another world called Grand Bahamar. Takafumi thinks him to be out of his mind, especially once he starts talking about having magic powers, but after showing Takafumi proof of his powers, the two begin living together, and Takafumi decides to use his uncle’s powers to make money. So begins a new style of isekai comedy between two men of different generations, one of which has returned from another world!

Background

Uncle from Another World began as a manga series written and illustrated by Hotondoshindeiru that began serialization on Kadokawa Shoten's ComicWalker website in June 2018. As of February 2022, seven collected volumes have been published under the MF Comics imprint. The manga is licensed for English release in North America by Yen Press, who will publish the fifth volume in July 2022. To date, the manga has more than 1.5 million copies in print, and in 2020 it was a runner-up for BookWalker's grand prize.

An anime adaptation was announced in June 2021. It is being produced by studio Atelier Pontdarc (Ganbare Doki-chan) and features Shigeki Kawai (Blend S, Naruto Shippuden) as director, with Kenta Ihara (Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious, The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter) handling series composition and scripts, Kazuhiro Ota (Natsu no Arashi!, Pani Poni Dash!) who is handling character designs and is also credited as the chief animation director, and Kenichiro Suehiro (Cells at Work!, Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World-) who is composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "story” by Mayu Maeshima, and the ending theme song is "Ichibanboshi Sonority” by Yuka Iguchi. The anime will premiere in Japan on July 6, 2022 on AT-X and will be streamed worldwide through Netflix.

Characters

Ojisan (Uncle) (Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu)
A returnee from another world. He was hit by a truck when he was 17 and was in a coma for 17 years before waking up. During that time, he was actually summoned to another world called Grand Bahamar, where he gained superhuman strength and went on great adventures. He is a diehard SEGA fan.

Takafumi (Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama)
Uncle’s nephew. After witnessing Uncle’s magic, he becomes his roommate, hoping to make a fortune from his powers. He is a huge fantasy nerd and enjoys hearing Uncle’s tales of adventure. However, he can also be a sharp-tongued critic.

Fujimiya (Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu)
Takafumi’s childhood friend who is currently a college student and has a crush on him. By chance, Takafumi tells her about Uncle’s powers. She has a good head on her shoulders and sometimes scolds Takafumi for his outbursts.

Elf (Voiced by: Haruka Tomatsu)
An elf adventurer who met Uncle in the other world. She falls in love with Uncle after he saves her from a jam, and she follows him around like white on rice. She’s a bit of a tsundere and constantly hurls insults at him.

Mabel (Voiced by: Aoi Yuki)
A girl descended from an ice family that protects the Frozen Sacred Sword, a weapon that has been handed down from generation to generation. She has shut herself in her room and closed her heart to others, but after meeting Uncle, her life gets turned upside down.

Alicia (Voiced by: Aki Toyosaki)
A novice adventurer. She is a holy mage who was adventuring with her childhood friends Edger and Raiga when she met Uncle. Due to various circumstances, she is given a title ill-fitting of her stature.

Edger (Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura)
A young swordsman. He is Alicia’s childhood friend and met Uncle when he was a novice adventurer together with Raiga. Though he acts cool, he’s a bit timid.

Raiga (Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto)
A hot-blooded young fighter. He is Alicia’s childhood friend and met Uncle when he was a novice adventurer together with Edger. He acts as the straight man to Alicia’s antics.

Sawae (Voiced by: Hisako Kanemoto)
A friend at Fujimiya’s university. She is a worrywart and is concerned that Fujimiya, who has recently become less social, may be hanging out with a suspicious crowd. She likes to read adult manga.
