Synopsis

Ichigo Momomiya is a young high school girl who goes on a date with her crush, Masaya Aoyama. But things take a weird turn when an earthquake occurs and she and several other girls are suddenly bathed in a strange light that merges their DNA with that of different animals and allows them to transform into heroic Mew Mews with strange powers. Now, together with four other girls with similar powers, it’s up to Ichigo and the rest of the Mew Mews to protect Earth from aliens called Chimera Animas that are trying to take over the world!

Background

Tokyo Mew Mew started as a manga series written by Reiko Yoshida and illustrated by Mia Ikumi that was originally serialized in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi shojo manga magazine from September 2000 to February 2003. The series was published in seven collected tankobon volumes under the Kodansha Comics imprint. A sequel manga titled Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode was serialized in Nakayoshi from April 2003 to February 2004 and was published in two volumes. Both manga have been licensed for English release in North America by Tokyopop. A spin-off titled Tokyo Mew Mew Olé! written by Madoka Seizuki also debuted in Nakayoshi in December 2019 and has been published in seven volumes as of May 2022.

Tokyo Mew Mew New is the series’ second TV anime adaptation and is being created to commemorate the series’ 20th anniversary. It is being produced by Yumeta Company and Graphinica and features Takahiro Natori as director, with Yuka Yamada handling series composition, Satoshi Ishino handling character designs, and Yasuharu Takanashi composing the music. The idol group Smewthie consisting of the series’ five main voice actresses will perform both the opening and ending theme songs, “Cat!! Shite SuperGirls” and “Tokimeki Ichigo Ichie.” The anime will premiere in Japan on July 5, 2022 on TV Tokyo.

A rich girl with a bit of a harsh personality. She excels at ballet and Japanese dance. She has a crush on Zakuro. Her DNA is merged with a blue lorikeet.

She is a king, gentle, and slightly clumsy girl. She excels at underwater combat. She usually wears glasses. Her DNA is merged with a finless porpoise.

Pudding Fong (Voiced by: Rian Toda)

Special Move: Ribbon PuRing Ring Inferno

She is super agile and excels at street performing. She is an energetic and mischevious girl who loves money. Her DNA is merged with a golden lion tamarin.

Zakuro Fujiwara (Voiced by: Momoka Ishii)

Weapon Name: ZaCross Whip
Special Move: Ribbon ZaCross Pure

A cool, charismatic beauty with excellent proportions. She is a talented girl who speaks five languages fluently. Her DNA is merged with a gray wolf.

Masaya Aoyama (Voiced by: Yuma Uchida)
Birthdate: May 22

He goes to the same school as Ichigo and is at the top of his class. He has excellent reflexes as a member of the kendo club, good looks, and a good personality. He has an interest in environmental issues.

Ryo Shirogane (Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura)
Birthdate: June 5

A mysterious, rich high school student. He started the Mew Project in order to protect Earth from aliens. He uses Cafe Mew Mew as his hideout.

Keiichiro Akasaka (Voiced by: Yusuke Shirai)
Birthdate: Nov. 12

A leading UMA (unidentified animal) researcher who works on the Mew Project together with Ryo. He works at Cafe Mew Mew and is an outstanding chef.

Masha (Voiced by: Kaori Ishihara)
An R-2000 robot who is nicknamed by Ichigo.

Quiche (Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto)
Birthdate: Feb. 14

One of the aliens who is trying to take over the earth by progressively polluting the environment and exterminating life. He is hostile toward the Mew Mews but has special feelings for Ichigo.

Tart (Voiced by: Daiki Yamashita)
Birthdate: July 8

One of the aliens. He has a childish personality and is called Taru Taru by Pudding.

Pie (Voiced by: Yuichiro Umehara)
Birthdate: Dec. 30

One of the aliens. He is always cool-headed and doesn’t show much emotion. He is brainy and excels at precise planning based on data obtained in battle.

Miwa Honjo (Voiced by: Aina Suzuki)
A reliable classmate of Ichigo’s. She dreams of becoming a novelist and is always searching for material for her novels.

Moe Yanagita (Voiced by: Iori Saeki)
A comforting classmate of Ichigo’s. She has an interest in human psychology and aspires to become a counselor.

Seiji Aizawa (Voiced by: Akira Ishida)
Mint’s older brother. He is a very talented university student and is also the president of a subsidiary of Aizawa Group.
