Synopsis

Zhuge Kongming, the famous military strategist from the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history, has somehow been reborn in modern day Shibuya, and he’s fallen in love with the singing voice of Eiko Tsukimi! Eiko is an aspiring singer who can’t seem to catch a break, and Zhuge is determined to create a new legend in the music scene by using his peerless abilities to be her strategist and take her to the top!

Background

Ya Boy Kongming! began as a Japanese manga series written by Yuto Yotsuba and illustrated by Ryo Ogawa that was originally serialized on Kodansha's Comic Days website from December 2019 to November 2021 before switching to Weekly Young Magazine, where it has been in serialization since. As of January 2022, eight collected tankobon volumes have been published under the Young Magazine Comics imprint. In 2020, it won the special prize U-NEXT Award at Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Taisho 2020, and in January 2022 the series surpassed 550,000 copies in print. The manga has been licensed by Kodansha USA for English digital release in North America, and the sixth English volume was published in December 2021.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in November 2021. It is being produced by P.A. Works and features Osamu Honma as director, with Yoko Yonaiyama handling series composition, Kanami Sekiguchi handling character designs, and Genki Hikota composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Chikichiki Banban" by QUEENDOM, and the ending theme song is "Kibun Jojo ↑↑" by Eiko starring 96Neko. The anime will premiere in Japan on April 5, 2022 on Tokyo MX, MBS, and BS NTV channels and will be streamed overseas through HIDIVE.

Characters

Eiko Tsukimi (Voiced by: Kaede Hondo (speaking), 96Neko (singing))
Eiko is a girl who works part-time at BB Lounge in Shibuya while trying to become a singer. After failing auditions and having no one show up to her performances, she is on the verge of giving up on her dream when she meets Zhuge Kongming, who falls in love with her singing voice and becomes her strategist to help her career and talent blossom.

Zhuge Kongming (Voiced by: Ryotaro Okiayu)
Zhuge is a figure from the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history and the world’s foremost strategist. He was killed in the year 234 during the Battle of Wuzhang Plains, but at the moment of his death he is somehow reincarnated in modern day Shibuya. He falls in love with Eiko after hearing her sing and begins living his second life as Eiko’s strategist.

Kabe-Taito (Voiced by: Shoya Chiba)
Kabe-Taito is an exceptionally skilled rapper who has won the MC Battle Championship three years running. However, due to past trauma, he spends his days trying to escape reality.

Nanami Kuon (Voiced by: Hibiku Yamamura (speaking), Lezel (singing))
Nanami is a busker in Shibuya who, after meeting Eiko, begins busking and singing together with her. She becomes Eiko’s close friend and enjoys spending time with her outside of busking.

Owner Kobayashi (Voiced by: Jun Fukushima)
Kobayashi is the owner of BB Lounge and is an avid otaku of the Three Kingdoms period. He sees Eiko’s potential and supports the ingenious schemes Zhuge comes up with.
