Synopsis

Somewhere on Earth, there is a land where small insects live called Insect Land. All kinds of insects live there, including fireflies, ladybugs, mantises, bees, butterflies, dragonflies, beetles, and more. They come in different sizes, colors, and shapes, and all live in different places! Some can fly, swim, or light up, and each has their own completely different personality. What methods do these unique insects use to solve the problems that occur in Insect Land? Dive into the world of insects and let them teach you all kinds of things!

Background

Insect Land is a series of educational children’s picture books created by Teruyuki Kagawa and French artist Thomas Romain and published by Kodansha. Six books have been published since 2020, and it has been selected as a recommended book by the Japan Committee for United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (UNDB-J) due to it being packed with educational content including Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is enjoyed by children and adults alike.

A TV anime adaptation is being produced by TMS Entertainment and TMS Jinni's and is being executive produced by series creator Teruyuki Kagawa. It features Jun Kawagoe as director, with Yuichiro Kido handling series composition and scripts and Ayumi Kakei handling character designs. It will premiere in Japan on April 4, 2022 on NHK Educational TV.

Characters

Adam (Voiced by: Asuna Tomari)
Adam is a shy firefly whose defining feature is his red hood. He’s bad at standing out, but when he gets scared or nervous, his heart starts to throb and his abdomen lights up brightly.

Mia (Voiced by: Misaki Kuno)
Mia is a seven-spotted ladybug who is always happy and cheerful. She is a mood maker who always cheers everyone up.

Charlotte (Voiced by: Karen Miyama)
Charlotte is an orchid mantis who is especially good at hide-and-seek. She has a strong sense of justice and takes the initiative as the leader of Insect Land.

Theo (Voiced by: Hiroki Nanami)
Theo is a horned-face bee and nobleman of Insect Land. He is an energetic and handsome boy who is service-minded. Friendly and amicable, he has a rich vocabulary and enjoys entertaining those around him. At a glance, he seems like a happy-go-lucky character who goes at his own pace. He speaks many different languages and tries to make friends with everyone he meets.

Eden (Voiced by: Rie Takahashi)
Eden is a cabbage butterfly who is kind and elegant. She is a character with a beautiful heart who is always smiling and treats her friends in Insect Land kindly. With her dress of pretty white wings, she excels at fluttering and dancing with style. She loves to read, study things she doesn’t know, and enjoy stories. Always stylish and well-mannered, she is admired by her friends in Insect Land.

Accel (Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae)
Accel is a lesser emperor dragonfly who likes to buzz around swiftly and fly through the sky. He is especially skilled at flying and is able to hover in mid-air and fly far and high. He has special compound eyes made up of many smaller eyes and can see in 360 degrees, so he keeps busy patrolling Insect Land.

Gabriel (Voiced by: Tooru Nara)
Gabriel is a Hercules beetle whose trademark is his long horn. He is a large and brave big brother of the forest. He is kind, strong, burly, and a bit bossy. He is the hero of Insect Land.

Rafael (Voiced by: Kimiko Saito)
Rafael is a giant stag beetle who is mischievous and bratty. He may look a bit scary, but he’s actually honest and kind.

Maxime (Voiced by: Kokoro Kikuchi)
Maxime is a leafcutter ant and a hard worker who always tries her best. She is a bit concerned about her small size. She is able to cut leaves with her mandibles and carry them in a line back to the nest.
