Synopsis

Nagi Umino is a second-year high school student who was mistakenly switched at birth and now attends a prestigious high school. One day, while going to meet his biological family for the first time, he runs into Erika Amano, a popular internet celebrity on her way to meet her future fiancé who makes Nagi act as her fake boyfriend. But little do they know the shocking truth that awaits them: They were both switched at birth and Erika is to become Nagi’s wife! The curtain rises on a romantic comedy that begins with being switched at birth!

Background

A Couple of Cuckoos began as a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Miki Yoshikawa that was first published as a one-shot in September 2019 before it began serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine in January 2020. As of January 2022, it has been published in 10 collected tankobon volumes under the Kodansha Comics label. The manga is being released in English by Kodansha USA, who have published six tankobon volumes as of March 2022.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in April 2021. It is being produced by Shin-Ei Animation and SynergySP and features Hiroaki Akagi as chief director and Yoshiyuki Shirahata as director, with Yasuhiro Nakanishi handling series composition and Aya Takano handling character designs. The anime’s opening theme song is "Dekoboko" by Kiyoe Yoshioka. The anime will premiere in Japan in April 2022 during the NUMAnimation programming block on TV Asahi. Crunchyroll will stream the anime outside of Japan.

Characters

Nagi Umino (Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa)
Nagi is a second-year high school student and an honor student who works hard at his studies to make life easier for his family. He is in love with his classmate Hiro. Though he is logical, he is also caring and is good at all kinds of housework.

Erika Amano (Voiced by: Akari Kito)
Erika is a second-year high school student and the daughter of a wealthy family who is an internet celebrity attending a prestigious girls’ school. Beautiful and popular, her hobby is uploading photos and videos to social media. Though cheerful and pure-hearted, she harbors antipathy for her father.

Hiro Segawa (Voiced by: Nao Toyama)
Hiro is a talented girl at the top of her class whom Nagi has feelings for. She is popular with both girls and boys alike, but she is airheaded and clumsy. She lives at a shrine and her hobby is collecting shrine stamps. She is a brown belt in karate. As the heir to her family, she too has a fiancé.

Sachi Umino (Voiced by: Konomi Kohara)
Sachi is Nagi’s younger sister and a third-year junior high school student. She has a bit of a brother complex. She is a beautiful girl whose looks rival even those of her biological sister Erika. Though charming, she harbors mixed feelings about Erika.

Yohei Umino (Voiced by: Ryohei Kimura)
Yohei is Erika and Sachi’s father and Nagi’s adoptive father. He is a former delinquent. He runs a Japanese restaurant and his hobby is fishing. Though he has a rough personality, he’s not a bad person at heart. He has a loving relationship with Namie even though they sometimes fight.

Soichiro Amano (Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa)
Soichiro is Nagi’s biological father and Erika’s adoptive father. He is a wealthy hotel manager, or as Erika calls him, the “Hotel King.” He has an unpredictable personality and can be elusive and aloof. He is the one who sets up Erika and Nagi to live together. He has the level of excessive wealth to be able to afford extravagant houses. He doesn’t get along well with Erika, and even Erika finds him hard to deal with.

Namie Umino (Voiced by: Yoko Hikasa)
Namie is Erika and Sachi’s biological mother and Nagi’s adoptive mother. She is a former delinquent. She is a hostess at the Japanese restaurant that Yohei runs. Although she is unaware of it, she has a youthful beauty that makes it hard to believe that she is the mother of two. She has a loving relationship with Yohei even though they sometimes fight.

Ritsuko Amano (Voiced by: Yukiko Aruga)
Nagi’s biological mother and Erika’s adoptive mother.
