High school student Ren Amamiya comes to the aid of a woman being harassed by a drunken man in the street but ends up getting arrested himself and accused of assault. Getting arrested also gets him expelled from school, whereupon he relocates to Tokyo to stay with family friend Sojiro Sakura and attend Shujin Academy. His Persona awakened, Ren teams up with fellow pupils at his new school to form the Phantom Thieves of Hearts with the intention of “stealing” the corruption from the hearts of adults to “reform” the world. Meanwhile, strange crimes plague the city…

Anime Adaptation

Persona 5 is the sixth installment in the Persona series and part of the wider Megami Tensei franchise of RPGs. Developed by Atlus, the game was released for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in September 2016 (Japan) and April 2017 (international). The game was first adapted as a standalone TV special, Persona 5 the Animation -The Day Breakers-, which aired on Sept. 3, 2016, and the full TV series adaptation was announced via Atlus’s official Persona Twitter account on July 30, 2017. Persona 5 is scheduled to premiere in April 2018.

Ren Amamiya (CV: Jun Fukuyama)
The series’ protagonist, Ren Amamiya comes to the assistance of a woman being hassled by a drunk but is then arrested for assault himself. Given a probationary sentence, he gets expelled from school and transfers to Tokyo’s Shujin Academy where his Persona awakens and he forms the Phantom Thieves of Hearts with fellow students in the hope of “stealing” corruption from the hearts of grownups and curing the town of its various ills.

Ryuji Sakamoto (CV: Mamoru Miyano)
Ren’s friend and companion, Ryuji Sakamoto operates under the Phantom Thief name “Skull” and has a Persona inspired by Captain Kidd, using bludgeoning weapons and shotguns during combat. Ryuji was also a member of the track team before Kamoshida broke one of his legs and the team was disbanded. Kind but impulsive, Ryuji grew up in a home with an abusive father until he and his mother eventually left and moved away.

Morgana (CV: Ikue Otani)
Operating under the Phantom Thief name “Mona,” Morgana is a cat found by Ren and Ryuji in Kamoshida’s home, living as a regular cat in Ren’s house in the real world. Morgana acts as the Phantom Thieves’ navigator before Futaba joins and is smitten by Ann. His Persona is Zorro and he fights with a slingshot and curved sword. Morgana can also transform into a minivan in the Metaverse to allow the Phantom Thieves to travel quickly.

Anne Takamaki (CV: Nana Mizuki)
Anne is a quarter American and has just returned from abroad to join Ren’s class. Fluent in English, Anne is also a model but is ostracized by the other girls because of the rumored relationship between herself and the P.E. teacher, Kamoshida. Going under the Phantom Thief name “Panther,” Anne’s Persona is Carmen and she fights with whips and machine guns.

Yusuke Kitagawa (CV: Tomokazu Sugita)
An orphan, Yusuke Kitagawa was taken in by the famous painter Ichiryusai Madarame who also acts as his mentor. A student in the fine arts department, Yusuke is refined and elegant with an eye for detail but is also very poor and often skips meals to buy art supplies. Going under the Phantom Thief name “Fox,” Yusuke’s Persona is Ishikawa Goemon and he fights with Japanese swords and assault rifles.

Makoto Niijima (CV: Rina Satou)
Makoto Niijima is the student council president at Shujin Academy and is extremely bright but suffers from an inferiority complex, unfairly comparing herself to her sister, Sae Niijima, to whom she feels indebted to care for after their father died. Using the Phantom Thief name “Queen,” Makoto’s Persona is Pope Joan and she fights with revolvers and Tekko.

Futaba Sakura (CV: Aoi Yuki)
Futaba Sakura is the adopted daughter of Sojiro Sakura who owns the cafe where Ren lives. Shy and reclusive, Futaba is an ace hacker but is withdrawn and depressed after witnessing the death of her mother in a traffic accident.

Haru Okumura (CV: Haruka Tomatsu)
Haru Okumura is the heir to Okumura Foods which runs the restaurant chain Big Bang Burger. Operating under the Phantom Thief codename “Noir,” Haru’s Persona is inspired by Milady de Winter and she fights with grenade launchers and axes.
