Synopsis

One day, second-year college student Aoi Tsubaki, a girl with the ability to see spirits, is suddenly transported to Tenjinya, a long-standing inn located in the Otherworld, where she learns that she’s supposed to marry the innkeeper to erase her late grandfather’s debt. Aoi is very much against the idea, so instead, she ends up working at the inn to slowly pay off her debt and return to the land of the living!

Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi is based on the light novel series written by Midori Yuma illustrated by Laruha, published under Fujimi Shobo’s Fujimi L Bunko label since 2015. It also has a manga illustrated by Wako Ioka that is serialized in Enterbrain’s monthly magazine B’s Log Comic since 2016. The light novel is currently at seven volumes published, while the manga is at three volumes published as of February 2018.

The anime adaptation was announced in November 2017 and is set to premiere in April on Tokyo MX and BS11. Produced by Gonzo, it will feature “Tomoshibi no Manimani” by Nao Toyama (also voicing the protagonist Aoi Tsubaki) as the opening theme and “Sai -color-” by Manami Numakura as the ending theme.

Characters

Aoi Tsubaki (CV: Nao Toyama)
Aoi is a college sophomore who inherited her grandfather’s ability to see supernatural beings, ayakashi. When she was small, her mother abandoned her, but she was saved by ayakashi before starving to death. Ever since then, she can’t bear to see people with an empty stomach, be it human or otherwise, and she will use her exceptional culinary skills to help them. She has a very straightforward personality.

Odanna (CV: Katsuyuki Konishi)
The owner of Tenjinya inn, located in the spirit realm. He’s an old, powerful yokai and one of the eight rulers of the Otherworld called the Eight Leaves. According to his employees, he’s a level-headed, callous, but at the same time very broad-minded person who carries himself with dignity and style. He doesn’t reveal his real intentions. Decades ago, he made a promise with Aoi’s grandfather Shiro, naming Aoi as collateral.

Ginji (CV: Shunichi Toki)
A nine-tailed fox, also called the “Beckoning Fox” of Tenjinya, who acts as the young master. In addition to his proper looks, he has good manners and doesn’t shy away from work, either. Employees of the inn consider him impeccable and often depend on him. Ginji specializes in transformation and can take up nine different forms.

Oryo (CV: Ai Kakuma)
A yuki-onna (snow woman) and the young landlady of the inn. Although she speaks and acts in an overbearing manner, she can be very childish at times. She cares more about her looks than her position, but at the same time, she’s a big eater. She adores Odanna and wants to marry into money.

Akatsuki (CV: Yuuma Uchida)
A tsuchigumo (spider yokai) and the clerk of the Tenjinya inn. Despite his hot temper, he’s a caring individual and a real hard-worker who tackles everything head-on. He’s very attached to Odanna and has a soft spot for his sister. Akatsuki is also the youngest member of the management and a very promising employee.

Byakuya ( CV: Atsushi Tamaru)
The receptionist and a seasoned veteran who manages all finances of the inn, Byakuya is a key figure at Tenjinya. Knowledgeable and strict, Byakuya is a hakutaku (similar to the Chinese Bai Ze, the name literally meaning “white marsh”) who doesn’t waste his time on things that don’t bring profit. That said, he advocates for investing into possibilities. He used to serve in the yokai capital palace and has a lot of people who owe him, including one of the Eight Leaves.

Chibi (CV: Manaka Iwami)
Chibi is an adorable, chubby-looking kappa the size of a temari (a handball crafted from fabric). He calls himself Aoi’s family and followed her to the Otherworld. He’s a harmless, weak ayakashi that lives in flocks, but he’s small even compared to his peers, which is why he often lost in battles for food during his time in the realm of the living.
