Background

Well-known as simply Doreiku, Dorei-ku: Boku to 23-nin no Dorei (Slave District: 23 Slaves and Me) is a psychological series which was first released as a web novel on Everystar by Shinichi Okada (Inou Maze, Weapon Geek) before being picked up for publication by Futabasha.

The series was then released in three novels between 2013 and 2014, and it was then followed by several sequels: Dorei-ku: Boku to 23-nin no Dorei.ex, Dorei-ku 2nd Shinjuku Kikou Kai, and Dai Dorei-ku: Kimi to 1-Oku 3-Senban no Dorei. Manga artist Hiroto Ooishi (King Sweets, Utsukushii Inu) then adapted the series into a manga between 2012 and 2016 which had a total of 10 volumes.

In total, the Doreiku series has more than 3.2 million copies in circulation as of December 2017. A live-action suspense thriller film titled Tokyo Slaves starring Sayaka Akimoto and Kanata Hongo was also released in June 2014.

Synopsis

The series is centered around the concept of an “SCM,” a “Slave Control Method”. Players in the SCM game wear the mouthguard-like item behind their teeth and compete in games where the winner becomes the master of the loser. The winner can then command their slave to do anything within their physical abilities that won’t harm or kill them. The slave can only be freed by their master, and if they remove the SCM device for more than 24 hours, they endure a punishment from the device.

Eia Arakawa is bored and cold when her friend tells her that her boyfriend Yuuga Ohta broke up with her after revealing that he’s gay. Curious about the story, Eia asks to meet with him. After they meet, Yuuga is extremely impressed with Eia and reveals the SCM game to her and asks her to be his partner. She agrees and the two begin their journey into the game’s dangerous world.

Anime Adaptation

An anime adaptation of the manga was first revealed on Oct. 7, 2017. The series is being directed and written by Ryouichi Kuraya (Overlord, The Irregular at Magic High School) with animation by Zero-G (Aikatsu!, Beautiful Bones: Sakurako’s Investigation) and TNK (AnoHana, Attack on Titan). Junji Goto (Daimidaler: Prince vs. Penguin Empire, School Days) is also serving as both character designer and chief animation director.

The series will star Hibiku Yamamura (Anne-Happy, Go! Princess Precure) as Eia Arakawa and Ryouta Suzuki (King’s Game the Animation, Recovery of an MMO Junkie) as Yuuga Ohta. Hikaru Midorikawa (Air, Future GPX Cyber Formula), Sayaka Senbongi (Aho-Girl, Knight’s & Magic), and Suzuna Kinoshita (King’s Game the Animation, Mameneko) have also been brought on as Seiya Shinjuku, Julia Katsushika, and Ayaka Toshima, respectively.

The anime will begin airing in April 2017 on Tokyo MX and BS11, and Netflix will stream the series in Japan.
