Synopsis

In a world divided between Inside and Outside, the people live in fear of the Outside, which is home to all manner of creepy monsters and curses. One day, on the border of the Inside, which is inhabited by humans, one such being comes across a girl atop a heap of dead bodies. She says her name is Shiva and begins showing affection to the one who saved her, whom she starts calling “Teacher.” The story of a human and inhuman who seem disparate in every way yet form a warm bond begins.

Background

The Girl from the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Nagabe that was serialized from September 2015 to March 2021 in Mag Garden's Monthly Comic Garden shonen manga magazine and has been published in 11 collected tankobon volumes under their Blade Comics imprint. A bonus volume will be published in March 2022. The manga has been licensed for English release in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment, who have published all 11 tankobon volumes as of November 2021. The manga was nominated for the Best Comic award at the 45th Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2018.

An original video animation (OVA) is being produced by Wit Studio. It features Satomi Maiya and Yutaro Kubo in charge of direction, screenplay, and character design, with Yusuke Takeda credited as the art director, Takeru Yokoi as filming director, and Schroeder-Headz who is composing the music. A Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the OVA was held from March to May 2021 and was a huge success, meeting its initial goal on its first day and exceeding its highest stretch goal on its final day, raising a total of over ¥22.6 million. The anime had its worldwide premiere at the Japanese Film Festival in the US on Dec. 11, 2021. The OVA will be released in Japan together with the bonus volume of the manga on March 10, 2022.

Characters

Teacher (Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama)
A cursed inhuman who lives in the Outside. He is a black, strangely formed figure with no sense of taste or pain. He comes across Shiva one day lying atop a heap of dead bodies at the boundary between the Inside and Outside and takes her in. He has a medical background and is called “Teacher” by Shiva.

Shiva (Voiced by: Rie Takahashi)
A human girl who is abandoned in the Outside and is saved by an inhuman that she begins to call Teacher. She has white hair and wears a white dress. She is innocent and is unafraid of Teacher, despite his scary appearance. She is good at making flower crowns.
