March Comes in like a Lion, the popular manga by Umino Chica, is receiving a live-action adaptation directed by Otomo Keishi and will be starring Kamiki Ryunosuke. Its release date is just around the corner on March 18, but fans will get to enjoy a glimpse ahead of time through the official photobook March Comes in like a Lion Film Visual Book going on sale March 10.
Kiriyama Rei (Kamiki Ryunosuke) lives alone in downtown Tokyo after having made his debut as a pro shogi player in middle school. He was then taken care of by his father’s friend and shogi player Koda after Rei’s parents and younger sister died in a traffic accident, but he ended up leaving the Koda home. He lives in isolation playing shogi but one day encounters the three sisters of the Kawamoto household who then bring him into their lively home for a meal. Rei will take on unbelievable battles wagering his mind, body, and soul against other shogi players!
The March Comes in like a Lion anime is also playing on NHK, and this live-action adaptation is coming after 10 years of the original manga’s serialization. This series captures the connections and love between all sorts of people including parent and child, brother and sister, friends, and teacher and student, pairing it with incredible competition as players try to bring down their opponents.
The cast includes Kamiki as the 17-year-old pro shogi player Rei, as well as Arimura Kasumi, Kiyohara Kaya, Kurashina Kana, Sometani Shota, Sasaki Kuranosuke, Kase Ryo, Ito Hideaki, and Toyokawa Etsushi.
The photobook that’s been announced will feature photos of that cast taken by Osamu Kikuchi who has also worked on film stills for Rurouni Kenshin, Himitsu: The Top Secret, and Rip Van Winkle no Hanayome. There are also comments at the end of the book by Kamiki and director Otomo, as well as a message illustration by Umino herself.
The official March Comes in like a Lion Film Visual Book will go on sale on March 10, and the first part of the film March Comes in like a Lion will open on March 18 with the second part to be released on April 22.
