Famitsu Announces Famitsu Award 2017 Winners!

On Apr. 27, prominent video game magazine Famitsu hosted their award ceremony for their Famitsu Award 2017, an annual event where readers from all over vote for the best games they encountered in the previous year!

The results for Famitsu Award 2017 were polled from Dec. 21, 2017 to Jan. 31, 2018 and included any games across all platforms that were released between Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2017.

This year's Game of the Year Award went to not one, but two big titles: Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Square Enix’s Dragon Quest XI.

If having two winners for the biggest award is any indication, 2017 was a fantastic year for video games. Fans are sure to recognize quite a few captivating titles in these next categories.

Famitsu readers also answered other questions that deserve awards of their own. The Best Character Award went to the protagonist Link from The Legend of Zelda series. Meanwhile, Square Enix was voted as the best game maker! Famitsu even gave away a Special Award, referring to games and systems in the industry that set new trends not seen elsewhere. There were two winners for that category: Undertale (8-4) and the new Nintendo Switch system by, of course, Nintendo!

While Square Enix was awarded the Best Game Maker Award, Nintendo actually had the most nominated games across the platforms with five total. Square Enix also tied with Capcom for the second most with two of their titles recognized.

The MVP of 2017 was Horii Yuji, who is a game designer and scenario writer. His resume is lengthy, with one title in particular appearing again and again: Dragon Quest. Horii has been involved with the series since the first one came out in 1986, meaning that he has been with it for literally decades.
