“Kizumonogatari” to Become Movie Trilogy; Part 1 “Tekketsu-hen” to Be Released on Jan. 8, 2016

It has been five years since the first anime adaptation in 2010. With changes made to the release schedule, this big project that has been silent for so long has now attracted the eyes of fans once again. New information was released in the early morning of Oct. 4 for Kizumonogatari, one work in the Monogatari anime series produced by Shaft and based on the original work by author Nisio Isin.

Kizumonogatari will be made into three movies: Tekketsu-hen (Blood and Iron), Nekketsu-hen (Passionate Blood), and Reiketsu-hen (Cold Blood). The first movie, Tekketsu-hen, will have a Japan-wide roadshow release on Jan. 8, 2016.

Among the many works by popular author Nisio Isin, Kizumonogatari has especially high popularity. The original work was published in 2008. Just like the other stories in the series, it focuses on main character Koyomi Araragi and the bizarre incidents he encounters. In terms of the series’ chronological order, it is the beginning of the entire story and depicts the events of the day prior to Koyomi somehow becoming a vampire. The episode offers a core backstory to the series.

Therefore, the announcement of an anime adaptation in 2010 was one that shocked fans. After that, the release was postponed until 2012, and this was subsequently changed. It’s safe to say that the confirmed release date of such a big title that fans have been anxious about, and the fact that three movies have been confirmed to boot, is tremendous news.

The broadcast to the TV anime Owarimonogatari just recently began, and the newest book Orokamonogatari was released from Kodansha Box on Oct. 6. It seems the Monogatari excitement will last well into next year.

The confirmed release date for the first movie wasn’t the only thing announced this time, various information about the movie was announced as well. First is the staff. Shaft is handling the animation production, the chief director is Akiyuki Shinbo who has supervised the anime series, directing is Tatsuya Oishi, and the character designers are Akio Watanabe and Hideyuki Morioka.

Also, the movie doesn’t have a general production committee like most animated movies and TV series and is being produced by three companies: Aniplex, Kodansha, and Shaft. The movie will be distributed by Toho Visual, a company whose forte is animated movies.

The key visual to Tekkestu-hen has also been released. It shows Kiss-Shot who will play a pivotal role in the movie. Advance tickets to the movie that feature this visual will go on sale at participating theaters on Oct. 9. Tickets will come with an original clear file as a bonus and cost 1,300 yen (includes tax). The official site to the movie was also renewed on Oct. 4. New information to come will be posted there.
