About Kutani Ware
The founding period of “Kokutani” was promoted in the Daishoji Domain around the Meireki era (1655). The discovery of ceramic stones in a mine in Kutani led Saijiro Goto of the Kaga Domain to Arita in Hizen, where he learned pottery techniques and built a kiln in Kutani, which would become known as the Kutani open kiln. During the Meiji era, the Shoza style became famous for its Western pigments and detailed painting style, and was exported, cementing its place in the Kutani industry.
About Sandblasting
Sandblasting is a technique in which sand is vigorously applied to a subject to give it a nashiji-like surface. A vinyl membrane with a cut out of the area to be engraved is applied to the glass, and sand is sprayed vigorously onto the exposed area using the power of compressed air. This process is repeated to complete the finished product.
Kutani Wa Craftsmen, Seiho-do Inc.
Kutani Wa glassware is a fusion of two traditional crafts, Kutani ware and handmade glass such as Edo glass, each of which is created with care one by one to live up to their respective traditions. The designs on the bottom portion of Kutani ware are all hand-painted, the glass portion is made exclusively with hand-blown glass, and the area where they are joined makes use of Good Design Award-winning techniques. Please take a close look at the new possibilities of these traditional crafts that harmonize with any living space, whether Asian or Western.
