Aoi Nishimata is a famous creator who does character design for various games. She also became a hot topic in 2008 by drawing an illustration of Ono no Komachi as a cute girl on the package of “Akita Komachi,” a type of rice produced in Ugo, Akita Prefecture. The product was a big hit, and by this, she played a central role in the boom of so-called “moe art,” the bishoujo illustrations that all products have been using ever since then.
The product Nishimata illustrated this time is the “Ugo Beef Barbecue Bento,” an eki-bento only sold in the Akita Central Shop of Newdays inside JR Akita Station. Eki-bento refers to box lunchs sold at train stations, and they often contain local specialties of the region. “Ugo Beef Barbecue Bento” is also made using two regional specialties: the “Akita Komachi” rice produced in Ugo and Japanese Black “Ugo Beef.”
The illustration on the package shows beautiful girls and Ono no Komachi, who is already familiar from “Akita Komachi,” dancing the Bon dance in colorful kimonos. This bento is a limited product and only 20 per day are sold. The price of the bento is 1,500 yen (tax included).
