Neon Genesis Evangelion is the massively influential mecha sci-fi franchise which began with the original anime series created by Hideaki Anno broadcast in 1995-1996.

Set in 2015, 15 years after the Second Impact, Neon Genesis Evangelion follows the adventures of teenager Shinji Ikari after he is summoned to Tokyo-3 by his father Gendo Ikari, director of paramilitary organization NERV. NERV is responsible for the creation of the large Evangelion robots which fight the marauding Angels. Moving in with NERV officer Misato Katsuragi, Shinji unwillingly becomes the pilot of Evangelion Unit-01, and along with fellow pilots Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Soryu becomes the Earth’s primary line of defense.

The Evangelion franchise has since gone on to conquer almost all other forms of media including a long-running manga series written and illustrated by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and has also been remade as a series of four animated movies known as Rebuild of Evangelion.
