Shinji Ikari faces the burdensome task of protecting the city of Tokyo-3, and mankind itself, against the terrifying Angels as the protagonist of Gainax's Neon Genesis Evangelion.

He finds himself summoned by his cold and distant father, Gendo Ikari, to pilot the mysterious mecha Evangelion Unit 01. The reclusive Shinji struggles with his relationships with his father and friends—Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley and Kaworu Nagisa—and with life in general, as the fate of the world rests in his young hands.
