Summary

Lying is bad, but loving is worse. Koi to Uso ( Love and Lies ) is set in a world where marriages are arranged by the Japanese government through the “Yukari Law” as a way to improve the health of the next generation and combat the country’s declining birth rate. A compatibility calculation based on genetics is used to do this, and when both partners are 16, they are notified of their arrangement.

There are severe penalties for not following through with this system, and as he approaches his 16th birthday, Yukari Nejima realizes that he’s running out of time to confess to his crush of five years and classmate, Misaki Takazaki. It turns out that she reciprocates his feelings, but what should be a happy love story turns tragic when he’s assigned his partner: Lilina Sanada, an intelligent and beautiful girl in the literature club of her all-girls school. Lilina is no happier about the arrangement than Yukari, but while they agree to keep up appearances to stay out of trouble, she gives him permission to experience love with Misaki.

This series was first released as a manga by Musawo in Kodansha’s Shonen Magazine Comics in August 2014, and as of June 2017, six volumes have been published. A live-action film being directed by Takeshi Furusawa and starring Aoi Morikawa, Yuto Shiba, and Sosuke Takachino is set for release later this year.

The anime adaptation will begin airing on July 3, 2017, and is being directed by Seiki Takuno ( Gintama, Naruto: Shippuden ) with Natsuko Takahashi ( Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach ) as writer and animation by Liden Films ( Poco’s Udon World, Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches ). Masaru Yokoyama ( Arakawa Under the Bridge, Your Lie in April ) and Nobuaki Nobusawa ( Dagashi Kashi, Seiren ) are also working on the music.

Ryota Osaka ( Your Lie in April, Assassination Classroom ), Kana Hanazawa ( Blue Exorcist, Monogatari series), and Yui Makino ( Ano Hana, Tsubasa Chronicle ) will be starring as Yukari Nejima, Misaki Takazaki, and Lilina Sanada respectively, and Shinnosuke Tachibana, Kisho Taniyama, and Kurosawa were brought on for the supporting cast.
