New Tokyo Ghoul Live-Action Still Shows Bando Minosuke as Uta

Kabuki actor Bando Minosuke will be appearing on the live-action film adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul opening on July 29.

The film is based on the original manga of the same name by Ishida Sui. Set in Tokyo, the story follows human-eating “Ghouls” in modern day Tokyo. It was first serialized in Weekly Young Jump in 2011, and its sequel Tokyo Ghoul:re began in 2014. More than 18 million volumes have been printed to date and it has also been adapted into an anime, stage play, and even a video game. Protagonist Kaneki Ken will be played by Kubota Masataka in the live-action movie, and Kirishima Touka will be played by Shimizu Fumika.

It’s recently been announced that Bando Minosuke will be playing Uta, the popular owner of the 4th district mask shop. Ghouls’ eyes turn red when eating prey or fighting, and Uta’s masks are used to help them live in the human world.

Unlike other Ghouls, Uta’s eyes are always red. His appearances makes him stand out, too, with his hair shaved on one side, piercings, tattoos, and punk fashion. He’s an extremely calm character, as well.

Bando released a statement on his role saying, “To be honest, when I first heard the news, I was confused. The only common trait between Uta and I are our lack of eyebrows and shaved hair on the side. The staff put everything together, though, from the tattoos, piercings, and clothes to the red eyes, so I was really able to put everything into it. As a fan of the original work I’m nervous, but I’m hoping to put on a performance that fellow fans will enjoy.”

Tokyo Ghoul will be opening in theaters around Japan on July 29.
