Weekly Shonen Jump Announces Three Exhibitions for 50th Anniversary!

Weekly Shonen Jump has been the home of legends since its release in 1968, and in commemoration of its 50th anniversary in 2018, there will be three exhibitions to look back on this magazine’s incredible history.

The first will open in July in Tokyo and is titled “Weekly Shonen Jump Launch 50th Anniversary Exhibit Vol. 1: The Legend Begins in the 1980s.”

Weekly Shonen Jump began as the bi-monthly magazine Shonen Jump in July of 1968. It moved up to a weekly publication in September 1969. It went on to serialize a number of massive hits and became the manga magazine with the most copies printed in 1994 with 6.53 million copies printed. It has turned out more than 100 million comics, earning its place as a massive influencer in the world of shonen manga.

It has hosted a number of adored shonen manga series including the long-lasting manga Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen-mae Hashutsujo which came to a sad end in 2016 but is currently being aired as an anime, as well as Dragon Ball and One Piece.

Now, this incredible publication is reaching its 50th anniversary. The 13th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump went on sale on Feb. 27, and it included a commemorative logo as well as details on plans for celebrating this anniversary.

“Weekly Shonen Jump Launch 50th Anniversary Exhibit Vol. 1: The Legend Begins in the 1980s” will begin by featuring the major hits from the 80s including Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daishou by Motomiya Hiroshi and Harenchi Gakuen by Nagai Kiyoshi. Other legends to be featured include Tezuka Osamu, Akatsuka Fujio, Ikegami Ryoichi, and Mizuki Shigeru. There will be amazing materials on display, making this an event no manga fan will want to miss.
