An exhibition of original artwork from Revolutionary Girl Utena and Mawaru Penguindrum created by Kunihiko Ikuhara, who is fiercely embraced by fans for his great contributions to anime, novels, and manga, will be held at the flagship Hanshin department store in Umeda, Osaka from Aug. 21-26.

Revolutionary Girl Utena, directed by Ikuhara, began as a TV anime in 1997. The story involves Utena, a girl who longs to become a prince, fighting dueling games over the “Rose Bride.” It is known as a story which is particularly difficult to understand as its developments unfold, and even now there are fans who are extremely passionate about it.

Ikuhara had been absent from the anime world for 12 years since the Revolutionary Girl Utena theatrical movie when he directed the TV anime Mawaru Penguindrum. The story to this anime revolves around brothers Kanba and Shouma Takakura going to great lengths to acquire something called a “penguindrum” in order to save their little sister Himari. Like Utena, it also confused viewers with its difficult to understand direction. Penguindrum is also a work with its own particularly fascinating characters and is highly popular.

This exhibition of original art from Revolutionary Girl Utena has already been held in Tokyo in March and in Fukuoka in April, both of which were packed full with fans. This time, as Osaka will be the last of these exhibits, it was announced that it will exceed Tokyo’s exhibit in scale. A suitable event for the final show and the release of new goods have also been scheduled.

This exhibit is the final large-scale exhibit of these original artworks. However, that’s not to say that those who attended in Tokyo or Fukuoka won’t find it worth attending too!
