Tamagotchi Don't Die Anymore

Tamagotchi Don't Die Anymore

It doesn’t have the shock of coming home from school and seeing this screen

We’ve all been there. You’re working so hard to keep your beloved (and super cute despite having a very limited number of pixels) Tamagotchi happy and healthy, but sometimes it just doesn’t work. No matter how much you feed it or play with it, your baby just isn’t happy.

There’s a worse outcome, though: your Tamagotchi dying.

Death has been one of the major points of the game since its inception. You get your new pet as an egg, hatch it, and take care of it until one day it passes away. Keeping it alive is no easy task, sure, but isn’t it that experience of losing a pet and the shock of it dying that makes you realize how important taking care of pets is?

Since the 2009 release of Tamagotchi iD, though, “death” has changed a bit. Instead of seeing your pet’s ghost, if you neglect it, it leaves a farewell letter and runs away. To see what this looks like, check out the video below!

It’s still sad and has the sense of loss, but it’s not quite the same, is it?

It came out on the 5/30/2016 episode of Sukkiri!!, though, that according to Bandai there’s an even bigger change in store: in the upcoming Tamagotchi, your pet will not die. Furthermore, there will be a Babysitter Mode that takes care of it from morning until evening so you won’t have to worry about it while you’re at school or work.

This apparently comes after a lot of discussions at Bandai where workers were torn between two camps. One argued that the shock of death adds meaning to the game and teaches you that taking care of your Tamagotchi is important, but the other argues that the shock is too much.

What’s your opinion on this upcoming change, though?
