How Was World Cosplay Summit Created? Documentary Program Comes to All ANA International Flights

Cosplay: the act of dressing in outfits of characters from anime, manga, and games and looking like you came straight out of the series. It has become hugely popular not just in Japan, but all over the world. World Cosplay Summit is an event where the best cosplayers in the world are crowned. The elite who make it past the preliminary rounds that are held in countries all over the world gather every year in Nagoya.

But how was the World Cosplay Summit created, and who manages it? A documentary program answering these questions has been made. Moreover, it will be viewable aboard airplanes on international flights to countries all over the world. The documentary program World Cosplayers, which was shot and produced at World Cosplay Summit, will be screened as in-flight entertainment on all international ANA flights beginning on Feb. 1.

World Cosplay Summit began in 2003 with the intention of bringing cosplayers from Japan and the rest of the world together. It is held yearly in Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture. The event is the largest cosplay convention in the world and participating countries/regions have increased year after year. 2015’s holding saw a record 26 countries/regions participating. The highlight of the event is the World Cosplay Championship, where participants are comprehensively judged not just on the execution of their cosplay but also in other areas including a stage performance. Each country battles it out with an impressive performance.

World Cosplayers follows foreign cosplayers from China and Indonesia during the World Cosplay Summit 2014. The documentary program is 70 minutes long and spans from before the event in each cosplayer’s home country to their performances during the World Cosplay Championship. The documentary will be shown on ANA flights during the in-flight program Is Japan Cool? which introduces the culture and charms of Japan. Cosplay was picked up for it being a staple of Japanese pop culture.

In other news, an advance screening of World Cosplayers will be held in Nagoya (Nikkei Nagoya Branch Building 3F Large Conference Room) on Tuesday Jan. 19 at 6:30 p.m. The event will be free to attend. Capacity is 100 people though, so it will be first-come, first-served.
