The Straw Hat Pirates in Ukiyo-e Style: A Collaboration Between “One Piece” and Arita Ware!

A collaboration has taken place between the nationally renowned manga One Piece currently serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump and Arita ware, a traditional craft of Japan. Bandai is releasing the “One Piece x Traditional Craft Arita Ware Large Plate.” Pre-orders began on Premium Bandai on Nov. 24.

The collaboration this time is between One Piece and top-grade porcelain maker Koransha. The surface of the plate is about 28 centimeters in diameter and on it is a scene fans will be familiar with that symbolizes the start of the New World Saga. The Straw Hat Pirates are drawn in an ukiyo-e style and are beautifully and brilliantly colored. The level of detail is also evident. The patterns of the Straw Hat Pirates’ clothing make use of the ancient style of kichijou monyou with arranged patterns that symbolize good omens. The artwork is also studded everywhere with nods to the world of One Piece, including Brook holding a Japanese lute with a whale motif and Franky holding a barrel with “Strong Man” written on it.

The plate costs 27,000 yen including tax. It is currently available for pre-order on Bandai’s official shopping site, Premium Bandai, and will be delivered in March 2016. The plate will also be on display at the event Jump Festa 2016 to be held at Makuhari Messe on Dec. 19 and 20 (Sat. and Sun.), 2015.

One Piece is a shonen manga by Eiichiro Oda that began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997. The story follows Luffy who dreams of being the Pirate King and the adventures he goes on with his friends. The series is popular not just in Japan but overseas as well, and the number of copies in print exceeds 300 million worldwide. In June of this year, the series even set the Guinness World Record for “Most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author.”
